The barkentine Webfuot arrived yesterday from a stormy voyage, with loss of some sails. Mr. M. J. Kinney is in the city, having arrived by Columbia. He will soon return to San Francisco. The liothesca Bay came down in tow of the E. N. Cooke yesterday. The same steamer took the Aberlemno up river. Another body supposed to be from the Luputu, came ashore on Wests Clatsop beach, and was given christian burial. - -The Olympics u.it.x., on the 28th, will be the leading atfuir. Four wf the best musicians in Portland are to be engaged. Capt. Gore passed through the locks with the Chief last Friday, and rendered much valuable assistance to sufferers from the flood, saving lires and property. Col. John Adair i f Adair it Co., Canoe pass Frazer river, British Co lumbia, called yesterday. He arrived by the Columbia, and will return to Frazer rirer soon. The steamer Dakota was disabled after leaving San Francisco on the 10th by breaking her shaft. The steamer "Victoria picked her up and towed her back to San Francisco on the 15th. We dw hope and pray that our readers may hare no such noisy thumping, bumping, hammering and jam of a place to read this paper, :is we have to prepare it for the press. Collisions between vessels in the narrow river at Portland are of fre quent occurrence. The Rothesca buy is the latest, clearing the Otter of some wf her rigging on Tuesday tnoru- Senator Slater writes hopefully of the chances of securing a liberal appropriation from the present con gress for Columbia bar improvement. The sum of 450,000 will be asked for. The Gem will be opened to-day by Alex. Campbell, one of the most popular carterers in the state, whom all old-time Oregonians will remember favorably, and all new comers soon learn to appreciate. We are glad to welcome Mr. Campbell to Astoria, and hope he may never have cause to re gret that he has cast his lot amongst us. We are gratified to learn that Leinenweber & Co., of the upper town hemlock tannery are extending their business farther east. An order calling for their leather reached them n the 17th from the live cit of Chi cago. They also have an order from Sitka for boots and shoes. Their leather is now acknowledged to be su perior to all other. Perseverance and good judgment in business matters such as actuate this house, always wins. The Oregonian yesterday saj's: Since our last report the river has fallen two feet here, and is receding rapidly. Wwrk on repairing railroads is be,ing pushed, and it is likely that communication to Roseburg will be established by Friday. Steamboat navigation from here to the upper Willamet is still suspended, and must remain so till the river has fallen enough to allow safe passage through the Oregon city locks. Beats will likely resume trips Friday morning. Tucson clamors for a Mint. It would go well with ice, sugar and brandy during the awfully hot weath er in August. In a Texas paper we find an ad vertisement of a shady geutlemaus residence. Most of the gentlemen who keep shady out this way have no residence. D. M. A wave of transitory mania .-seems to have swept over the southern regions of the coast, from Bodie to Tucson. Homicides have followed quickly on each others heels. In Los Angeles county there was a resultant outbreak of transitory sanity, during which the populace seized and hanged a murderer. It soon died out, how ever, and another murderer under went the pleasant process of what the papers called being ''safely lodged in jail." It is very pleasing to us to be in formed that the Chief of the Signal Service in Washington iB in hearty ac cord with The Astokian the Chamber of Commerce, and the life men of this community concerning the establish ment of a signal station at Tillamook rock light. He says: "1 am auxious to do what I can to promote the plan proposed by the Astoria Chamber of Commerce." If the Pacific coast dele gation can now secure the appropria tion, which we believe they can and will do, the work will be immediately begun.
