With such miserable jail as Clat sop county is prox-ided, Astoria is be coming a sort of etysium for roughs. A case without a parallel a man finding a lost umbrella in a printing ofiice, before it was advertised. Mii er got it. Two correct solutions of last Sun days puzzle have been luuided in, one of the solvers of which asks for some thing hard. Mrs. Ada Jewett was out walking on Saturday for the first since her ill ness. She had been confined to her room nearly two mouths. Mr. Ralph Jones informs us that there was considerable snow in the Kehalem region last Friday, but it went off quicker than it came. The winter thus far in this county has not been severe enough to check the growth of grass, and stock is plump and fat as a general thing. The steamer Rip Van Winkle sunk through carelessness on Satur day, was pumped out by the Araoskeag steamer of Astoria Engine company No. 1, on Saturday last. Mr. Cnllen, late of SaH Francisco, whose ad. appears in another column is represented as a first class musician, and in connection with Mr. Charles E. Barnes will give lessons on the piano, violin, guitar, banjo or cornet. Mrs. Capt. G. W. Woods requests us to say that she has not received an' letters from Mrs. Capt. Irven. How the report became so widely spread is a mystery. She is an ac quaintance but not in correspondence with Mrs. Irven. The make shift uf a county jail in this city is beginning ti fill up again with, thieves and rogues, who will be kept at county expense until about time for court to inset, when they will skip. Xelligan was held in de fault of 300 bonds on Saturday, upon examination before Justice Fox. Those professional bums who stopped at Astoria and received notice from the police have quit the city. Such kumbuggers find the very poor est sort of comfort in Astoria. Live, wide-awake men, possessed of industry and sagacity, will find here cordial wel come, but no bummers can live here. A warrant for the arrest of the man Win. Xdligan for larceny lust fall, was in the hands of Chief Carry. The culprit took good care not tn come back to the county till after the Janu ary term of the Circuit-court. It was upon this charge that he was held last Saturday. The watch which he is ac cused of stealing then belong' d to Thomas Johnson. Last Friday night Chief Barry arrested three fellows Wm. MeUiyan, JJaa McMiUcri, and Ed. Smith for larceny of a watch and chain from fiViomas McDonald on the steamer E. y. Cooke at the Fanners dock the Honda7 previous. The Chief was not able to prevent them from throwing into the bay what he supposed was the stolen watch, but as good luck would have it, something else was thrown away, probably some other stolen property not yet missed, for on search ing the prisoners at the city jail Chief Barry found the watch and chain con cealed in Smiths boot. Capt Raven. Mr. P. L. Cherry, aget at Astoria for the Portland consignees of the ill- fated Lupata has received a letter from Vice-consul Lnidluw inclosing a photograph of Capt. Raven, which has been left at The Astoeian office for a few days in the hope that the persons who buried the remains of the nnfortuuates may identify Capt. Raven, that the place may be marked fur future exhutning and final inter ment. The master of the Lupata died at sea nine days out from Ant werp, and Capt. Raven as first-mate, took the ship on to Yokohama, and loft there for the Columbia river. -Chief JJany is delighted with this weather. Steamer day. (Jrugon to sail; Columbia to arrive. Capt. Giliaan took the Prudence to Portland un the 10th, E. Cooke tnwiny. The Shubrick made a trip to Tillamook rock on Friday last, lauding the keepers at the light. The total snowfall at The Dalles this whiter has been thus far seven feet, and of rainfall seven inches. The three persons arrested for stealing JIcDonald's watch, will have an examination before Justice Fox to day, if the steamer E. X. Cooke ar rives from Portland. People who "take the Oregonian for the dispatches" must admit that xcithuHi dispatches the past week it has been a very much mure readable puper than usual with dispatches. Mr. Frank Stafford reports find ing a ships boat on the beach opposite -his Clatswp farm which bears marks uf a fire having been kindled under its bow, and the sides were cut aud split as if by a knife. Did it belong to the Lupata' Jim Driscoll (net Tim) increased the revenues of the city by forfeiting $10 00 for his appearance in police court. He was afterwads arrested for defacing a building, and upon trial btfore Justice Fox was seut t the county jail in default of $10 line and cost. We are glad to see Mr. J. McNeil lately connected with the Seaman's bethej. among us again. lie is acting as colporteur for the American Tract society and has some excelleut books for sale. Be will remain a few days canvassing the city, and we bespeak for him a cordial reception. The owners of the Chinese wash houses iu Portland do not take kindly to the new license law, and it was with a great deal of reluctance that almost twenty of them last Friday complied with the law. Chief Lappeus is giv ing them a chance to understand the law and the fact that they hare gut to pay the license, aud scleral who were arrested for being in arrears, but after wards paid the required $5, and were released. It is said that there are not over forty Chinese wash-houses in the city, a statement that will be a sur prise to many, as it would appear that three times that number were being run. On Tuesday last, Mr. Henry Thielson, assistant engineer of the railroad division of the Oresron Railway and Navigation company, with a party of four men, left the mouth of the John Days river for the pupose of going down to CYli lo. lihNrtly after starting a dense fog appeared on the river which rendered it impossible for the men in the boat to distinguish the shore line, and the increased swiftness of the current of the river earned the boat along at a speed not real ized by the occupants until the harsh, dull roar of the water as it dashed over the head of the cas cades below Celilo was heard, and an awful fate seemed inevitable. It was useless to endeavor to bring the boat out of the whirling eddies that now encircled it and the rushing waters seemed to be but playing with the frail bark, as every moment it was drawn near er aud nearer to an almost certain doom, while the wild roaring of the waters as they dashed down into the seething abyss below seemed to hiss and sputter and laugh in a perfect carnival of terror as the territied inmates of the boat approached the fatal spot. Like a flash, the boat suddenly darted out of the eddy straight to the fall one minute and the boat would be dashed to pieces, but as if guided by the hands of Provi dence, the boat caught on a sunk en rock just on the verge of the fall, and lying there swinging with the motion of the waters, but leav ing the men powerh-ss, facing death, and while saved from it still unable to escape. It was at this moment that a new danger, and one that made the certainty of be ing carried over the falls inevitable now presented itself. Coming down the river aud almost on top of the boat was discovered an im mense floe of ice. The almost cer tainty of a death either by being carried over the rocks or else crushed to pieces in the ice was only left to choose, and before the engineer and his party conld real ize it the ice was upon them, aud one immense cake had shot under the boat, lifted it over the sunken rock, and ice, boat and men were carried over the falls down into the basin below and not a soul injured. It was a fearful experience, an event that not one of the partv will never forget though thev live to be numbered with the centenarians of future vears. Once in the basin below, the party went to the shore and reached their destination by overland route. Adler is selling school books very low. TWELVE YEARS AGO. Xete of a Trip to Antoria In 1SGS. Columbian. "We passed on to Astoria, arriv ing there just before dusk. We were delighted with the improve ments gained during the two years we had been absent. Here was a splendid hotel built by Captain Flavel, and rented b Arrigoni as soon as completed, going up close at hand. A short distance off were two churches and an elegant hall built by the friends of progress. The streets are very much im proved, and everything about the place looks thrifty. The town evi dently has a healthy growth. The community is much excited here as elsewhere on the subject of rail roads. There is a railroad company to build a railroad from Astoria to Salem already incorporated. There has been an exploration and survey of it as far as Forest Grove in Washington county. Jt is found ever- wav practicable. The dis tance from Astoria to Forest Grove on a straight line is fifty miles, and less than a hundred miles from Astoria to Salem. The route strikes the vallev of the Xehalem river about fourteen miles from Astoria, and follows the valley of that river about twenty miles to where it interlocks with the Tuala tin river. There is no portion of the whole route that will require over sixty feet of rise to the mile. The people of Astoria are very sanguine of accomplishing the work in the next few years. The Nehalem valley is from three to six miles wide, affording some of the richest and best land yet to be settled near the coast, and is said to abound with groves of the finest timber. We must elose, but will write more next week re specting this thriving place. We must not forget to mention the Astoria hotel, kept by the Megler Brothers. It is a first-class house and everyone that goes there once will ro arain. May their shadows never ;row less. AROUND THE CITY. -A full assortment of counter anil irwers scales can be found at M. C.
