In consequence of removal of machinery and materials from one floor to another in The Astokiax building yestcrdav, to better ac commodate our work, the paper this morning is not quite up to the standard of excellence. Wheat and Freights. We are indebted to Messrs. Kodg- crs. Mover & Co. for a com of -their monthly circular, which con tains a carefully prepared estimate of the stock of wheat remaining- in California on the first of January, which vre reprint belew: Estimate of cnui of lbfeu remaining iH Hit atate .Taiiuar 1. This statement is of particular Talue at the present time, as it gives a starting point from which can be figured out with ap proximate correctness the de ficiency in the tonnage sup ply. We therefore, repeat the statement published in our issue of the 22d of December, corroding the tonnage statistics to date, and using the above statement instead of the loose estimates heretofore published. The figures are taken from the San Francisco News: Teac Estimated .stock of wheat on hand January 1 l,0.oro .SuIpnedJan.ltodate (wheat lions. and flour reduced to whuat) 1.478 Engaged tonnage in port (carrying eapacitj ) 88,0C5 Disengaged tomuige in iort (earrjhu: capacitj) . 3J.5M Tonnage on the way (curry- ing capaein ) 'iA3su 405,0a! .Apparent deficiency in ton nage supply .. A81,(OS From this amount must be de ducted the quantity used for seed ing, local consumption, etc., for irhich purposes 200,000 tons is a liberal allowance, and it is there fore evident that there are in round numbers 390,000 tons of wheat available in California for export, for which tonnage cannot possibly be obtained tlunnjr the current crop year. Wo have made no de duction for tonnage used in the trade with the Atlantic states, the coal, lumber and island trades, nor for the possibility of tonnage being drawn to Oregon, which has been done to some extent already, and probably will continue. This, it is thought, will more than offset any arrivals not down on the list of Tessels bound to San Francisco. Oregon also has a very heavy wheat crop,' and will doubtless coatribute somewhat to Californias xport surplus, both in shipments of flour and wheat. With such -startling figures before us we think the claim that freights strong position and would keep the tipper hand throughout the reason is borne out by the facts of the case. It is not unlikely that the English wheat market will re main at a low point throughout the balance of the season, in which case no very material advance can be made in freights, but it is also strongly probable, and may be con sidered a demonstrated fact, that wheat must remain at a low range of values, as any improvement in the English whe.at market is likely .to be entirely absorbed by freights. On the 25th of November, Mr. Billings, president of the North ern Pacific Railway company, in a letter to Gen. Sprague announcing the negotiations for a loan of forty Million dollars by the company, .said: "Wc will now push the work on both sides of the conti nent with the utmost vigor. The day of doubt is past and somehow I feel almost as if my lifes work is .accomplished. Anybody now can 3mild the road, but I pray God to spare my life until I can see the J3ast rail laid." Yankee Snrcess. The British Trade Journal, in a recent issue has an item entitled the secret of Yankee success, which has sorae very sensible observations upon what was seen by a special correspondent of that paper. It savs: "ine Americans nave, as a matter of fact, gone far ahead of all other countries in this respect, and have had to educate, as it were, some of their national cus tomers up to their superior knowl edge. A French firm, for exam pie, sent to America for a certain style of pitchfork. They were made to suit the requirements of the customer, who, however, did not want them, because they were lighter than he had ordered. The response was 'you have the strength you require, what more do you want.' The truth was the French customer had retained the idea that there could be no strength unless the article was heaTy and clumsy looking, and it was not until they found out the truth that had been proved by American experience, that they consented to adopt the light forks. The same truth is now being manifested in England by the re cent introduction of American small agricultural tools, the ship ment of which, I am told, is this year largely increasing. The ques tion is, will the Englishmen con sent to take a leaf out of an Ameri can book." The Cincinnati Enquirer says that "Senator John P. Jones, of Nevada, is the ablest and wisest man on all questions of fin ance in the senate, and is capa ble of teaching all congress on these questions." This is a high compliment to pay to a member of so illustrious a body of men as the United States senate, and is doubt less inspired by the thorough study Mr. Jones has given the question of bi-tnetalism, of which the Enquirer is an ardent advo cate. It is admitted, however, that Senator Jones has not only gone deeper into the principles in volved in the single gold standard position than any other public man in this country, but that he can teach many foreign writers on finance on their clnesen subject. The battle over silver must soon be fought, and the immense inter ests arrayed against it will furnish occasion for good work on the part of its advocates. riPWliat pleasure it is to pay ones, debts !
