tn glic gnili QslnxXxin. ASTORIA. OREGON: "WEDNESDAY JAN. 12. 1SS1 J.C. IREL1XI Editor. The Asnual Sauna-. The London Saturday' Review discussing the growing scarcity of sound iurestmenL securities abroad, sa-s that only :i few years ago United States bonds could be bought to return 7 ami S per cent, and patiently inquires. Where can securities such as these be found to give a like income? Consols yield only about 3 per cent. Even Russian and Hungarian bonds, great as the risk attached to them, pay an inetor no more that 5i to Gi per cent. Stock ex change prices are extremely high, iind the permanent tendency of events is to lower the interest of money. The principle cause of this the writer attributes to tin magnitude of the savings in the more advanced countries of the world. Jn Great Britain alone there are 200,000,000 waiting in vestment. Jn France the anHual savings are about 40 00,000,0 00. The writer directs attention to the great and rapid growth of the United States, aud he esti mates the savings in the three countries named at the enormous sum of $3,000,000, 000. He is not inclined to believe that the saving classes wili be wil ling or obliged to accept a lower return for their savings for the principal reason that the instru ments of production admit of vast improvement and production will require much more money. Steel will supplant iron in naval con struction just as iron supplanted wood. The railway interests are yet in their infancy. Aud lastly, a great European war would de molish all calculations. He con eludes that it would be rah to assume that the inducements to savings are about to be perma nently diminished. Albert W. Kinney. Oregou'mi 10th. Some das ago we published a brief paragraph on the death of Albert W. Kinney. At the time we desired to pay a more fitting tribute to his worth as a man, but it was postponed for the obtain ment of certain dates in the histo ry of his life. As some of these .have been obtained, we return to perform a tardy act of justice to the memory of one in whom the elements were so mixed that all the world might say: "This was a man." Albert W. Kinney was born Oct. 3, 1813, at Mascatine, Iowa. His father, Robert C. Kinney, emiffrated to Oreffon with his fam ily in 1S47, and settled in Cheha Jem valley six miles north of La fayette. Here a numerous family grew up on a farm. Several of the members, Albert among them, at tended school at Forest Grove. Activity and energy were charac teristic of the family. Albert be gan his business course in 18G2, not yet nineteen years of age; with a pack train to the Florence mines in north Idaho. "With one of his brothers he also packed and trad ed to the Granite creek mines. Subsequently they engaged in bus iness at Umatilla Landing, where they continued five years. Then Albert went into business with his father in the McMinnville flouring mills, and shortly afterwards they boujrht the flouring mills at Salem. The father died about six years aro. Albert continued the busi uess, established for his flour a reputation in Portland aud San Francisco, made large shipments to Liverpool, and made his flour favorably known there. He en larged the working capacity of the mills to six hundred barrels a day, and was intending to double the capacity again the present year. He had twenty-two warehouses along the river and railways, and purchased wheat in large quanti ties at nearly all points in the "Vf il lamet valley. In all his large bus iness transactions he was known for strict integrity of conduct. His .name was assurance always for honorable transactions. In every sense the death of such a man, in the prime of his manhood and in the full flush of an active and suc cessful career, is a great loss to a community. In this case also there were personal qualities which won the confidence of all who came to know him well. Such a life is an example for our young men. For thih geneiation Albert Kinney will need no monument of granite or marble, for his memory can never wither in the hearts of those who knew him for what he was. np:v TO-DAY. T). 3i. . ,n-:xxr.';s.
