by the ladies of Astoria most assuredly
deserves special remark. To say that
it was successfully managed ali
throughout, and that every person
present enjoyed themselves, is but a
tame way of expressing the matter.
The hall was crowded and the novelty
of occuping the seats until invited to
dance was greatly enjoyed by tho
gentlemen. It gave the gentlemen
an opportunity also to realize the
situation of a lady more fullj when
engaged ahead for four or five sets.
The music was good, and the supper
j prepared on the stage, was excellent..
The various committees having the
matter in charge are deserving of
great credit. Very many gentlemen
in attendance request U3 to return the
ladies "heartfelt" thanks for atten
tions and the pleasure afforded by this
party.

The Argonaut of December 25th
copies from The Astoriax of Decem
ber 7th one of the many gems of
original poetry which have been from
time to time contributed to these col
umns. The X'iece was a very remark
able production upon Astoria weather,
adapted to this climate, and all that;
Pixley credits the production to an
"unknown imbecile." It was worth
copying into The Argonaut, it will be
observed, all the same; and the imbe
cile who copied it is not unknown;
we had the pleasure of meeting him
at the Sherman-house club-room fre
quently, in Chicago, last June.
Among the duties prescribed, or,
rather, among the privileges granted
to the California board of railroad
commissioners by the "Kearney code"
recently adopted, is power to regulate
freight and passenger rates of steam
ship lines in the coast trade, doing
business under charter from the state
with authority to examine their books
for the purpose of information. The
Pacific coast steamship company to
which the steamer State of California
in the Portland and San Francisco
route belongs, has filed complaint be
fore the competent court contesting
this clause of the constitution. The
parties have agreed to make this a
test case.
