Mixed Religions and Races. t It is probable that tliere is not in the world any other public or private establishment "which pre sents so many varieties of nation ality and religion as the govern ment printing oilice in Bosnia. There are among its employees three Bohemians, one Corinthian, one Croat, three from lower Aus tria, one Roumclian, twelve Turks, two Servians, one Afghan, one Prussian, one Russian, and one Dalmatian. As to religion, there are twelve Mohammedans, one Prus sian evangelical, several orthodox Greeks, one uniate Greek, and several Roman catholics. A S tin gent Act- Among the laws enacted by the late legislature of Illinois is one providing that any banker or broker, or person doing a banking business, or any officer of airy bank ing company, who shall receive a deposit when insolvent, whereby the deposit so made shall be lost to the depositor, shall be deemed guilty of embezzlement, and shall be fined in double the amount of the sum fraudulently taken, and also imprisoned in the peniten tiary for not less than one nor more than three years. The fail ure, suspension, or involuntary liquidation of the banker, broker, or banking company within thirty days after receiving the deposit is to be deemed prima facie evidence of an intent to defraud. Tit for Tat. The new German tariff is aug meriting: the ill feeling1 between Germany and Russia, which first became distinctly observable during the Berlin congress and was afterwards so much increased by the precautionary action of the German government during the outbreak of plague. The manner in which the Russian and German journals are at present nagging at one another is perfectly childish. The Germans dilate with evident pleasure on the disturbed internal condition of Russia, and express horror at the idea of a Russian having been found to attempt the life of the once revered Czar. The Russian journals reply: Tu quoque. Do not forget that your emperor was fired on twiee witliin a short interval, and our emperor has only been fired on once. T!xo "Slienan&onli." London Werld. Everybody has heard of the Shenandoah, the notorious priva teer of the southerners in the American civil war, but I do not suppose that many know what was the ultimate fate of the ship when the war ended. Of all places in the world she now lies tfathoms deep" off the island of Socotra, in the Arabian Gulf. Her story is a strange one. She was busy burn ing whalers in Behring Straits w'nen "Waddel, her commander, the mildest-mannered man who ever scuttled ship or cut a throat, heard of the collapse of the south. His occupation being gone, and being without home or harbor to which he durst with safety return, he ran the Shenandoah to Liver pool a'nd immediately surrendered her to Her Majesty's ship Donegal, in the Mersey. She was handed over to the American consul and afterward bought at auction by Nicol, Fleming & Co., a firm that has earned a notoriety in connec tion with the failure of the City of Glasgow bank, for the Sultan of Zanzibar. After remaining idly at Zanzibar for some years, she was sent to Bombay for repairs, but foundered off Socotra, all hands be ing lost except one Englishman and a few Lascars. A young man from the rural districts came down to town yesterday and from his maneuvers evidently intended to swindle some of our merchants out of a suit of clot lies, buthe- found clothing so very cheap at the I. x. t Stoke, thai he made a purchase at once. If a man in San Francisco or in Oregon, drops in the post-offico a let ter misdirected or without a stamp, as sometimes happens even with careful correspondents, ten weeks must elapse before he hears anything of it, for it caunot be opened short of the dead letter office in Washington, whither it is sent. It is now proposed to get over this difficulty bv establishing branch dead letter offices in different parts of the country, a common-sense plan. MARRIED. At the residence of A. E. Blown.
