Prof. Kohl, in a recent paper, denies the exclusive modern use of guano in agriculture, and quotes the Arabian geographer, Edresi, as mentioning cliffs border ing the Persian gulf, which were covered with the excrements of birds. These were used as manure at Bassora and up the Euphrates. The Peruvians also used guano at the time the Europeans first ar rived there, and Humboldt, early in this centuiy, urged its use, but without effect. It was only in 1840 that the first ship load of the article was sent to England, and a large demand soon sprang up. Plague Precaution. The disinfection of letters contain ing paper money, during the height of the Russian plague panic was effect ted on the Prussian border by expo sing them for six hours in a peculiary constructed closed vessel, to the fumes of sulphuric acid. It was not consid ered necessary to open or puncture the letters, since it was proved by -experiment that the vapor of the acid penetrates the pores of paper however firmly made. In the labratory of the Berlin board of health, blue litmus paper inclosed in four thicknesses of .paper, and in several envelopes tightly compressed, was intensely reddened by being subjected to the fumes of this acid. Connecticut will, if the senate sbould pass and the governor not veto the bill, adopt the Moffat reg ister. Virginia still uses it, Louisi ana has just abandoned it, Texas is about to try it, and Alabama, Florida and North Carolina have decided against it. Russia is said to be negotiat ing with Spain for the cession of the Ladrone islands, in te north Pacific. They would afford an ex cellent base for cruisers to operate in the Chinese seas, and the Eng lish press call the attention of their government to the subject. Berlin is experimenting with electric lights for the illumination of streets and factories. In re spect to the matter of lighting, there is more enterprise shown in Germany than there was with re gard to street railroads, which were not introduced there until Iens: after eveiy one-horse city in the United States could boast of them. The beautiful old church of St. Nicholas, in the Swiss town of Freiburg, suffered severely during a recent hurricane. Many of the pinnacles were broken, and the famous rosette window was badly damaged. The statute of St. Nicholas of the chief portal was turned three-quarters round by the hurricane, but, curiously enough, it was not thrown down or injured. Angell. the Pullman car dc faultcr, enjoys his prison quarters at Joliet. He is bookkeeper in the business ofiiee, lias a cushioned arm chair and black walnut desk, and the windows of his room open upon a delightful lawn and gar dens of flowers. But for the fare, that hardly equals that of the Palmer house, and his striped suit, he would hardly feel the change. The progress of the excava tions for the underground drain age at Lincoln, England, is contin ually ia'ing bare fresh traces of the Roman occupation. A portion x)f a fine mosaic pavement, of a jruillnche pattern, together with rich wall frescoes, paving tiles, and other traces of a sumptuous Roman residence, have been discovered just outside the Exchequer gate, to the west of the cathedral. These remains are within a short distance of the hypocaust found beneath the percentory in 1739, and belong perhaps to the same mansion. With the legislature's expen ses double what they were ten vears ajo, and increasing at the rate of 25,000 a year, says a York state paper, the honest men of both parties recognize the necessity of retrenchment. Several committees had reported where extravagance might be checked, and bills carry ing out the siiGTffestions have been put through the Assembly; but the senate killed them. To cut down expenditures is to cut oil' party patronage; and that is more than the professional pohticans will consent tu do. Passanante, the would-be assas sin of King Humbert, has won the admiration of Italy, by the cool ness and stoical courage he dis played during his trial just ended. A bold brigand is always a hero in Italian eyes. A bridge has been thrown across the Tiber at the point in Rome known as the "Porto di Ripetta," a locality familiar to the artist world. The bridge is a splendid modern structure and was inaugu rated by the King, who, with his staff, rode across it on the 10th. "When the Russian female doe tors who heroically served :is sur geons in Turkey during the last Turko-Russian war returned to their country, they found that the opposition to the regular medical practice had disappeared. They are now officially employed, on equal footing with other members of the facult', in many hospitals and in different provincial districts. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Ketnrii ! Return !
