TLuic Eastern Elections.
Boardiiuin, republican was re
elected mayor by 150 majority
over the democratic and green
Lack candidates, in Calais, Maine.
The Council Bluffs, Iowa,
election resulted in a draw. The
republicans elected marshal and j
treasurer,an(l the democrats mayor,
recorder, and assessor, and three
or four aldermen.
The democrats of Sandusky,
Ohio, elected Sioane mayor by
000 majority. The school beard,
the marshal and commissioners,
and probably the sol'citor, are re
publicans. The democrats are
jubilant over the election.
The entire republican ticket
was elected in Keokuk, with the
exception of one greenback alder
man. Two other greenbackeis
were elected in wards where the
republicans made no nominations.
The vote was unusually large.
In Hartford, Connecticut, the
republicans elect the city auditor
and marshal by an average plu
rality of over 300, and the demo
crats the city clerk and treasurer
by an average plurality of 170.
The republicans retain the control
of the common council.
Sufficient returns are in to
demonstrate that the republicans
of Columbus, Ohio, have swept
the city and elected G. G. Collins
mayor and all the balance of the
ticket. This is the first time repub
licans have elected their candidate
for mayor since 1S58.
The republicans in Cleveland,
Ohio, have elected the whole city
ticket, with a probable exception
of police judge, by 1,500 majority.
Democrats and greenbackers had
combined against them. Advices
from smaller towns on the reserve
show republican victories.
The republicans in Cinc:nnati
claim the election of Jacobs for
mayor over Harris by 10,000 ma
jority. The vote polled was un
usually heavy, equal to the cast at
lastnresidential election. There-
publicans also claim the election
of the entire city ticket, with the
possible exception of police judge.
At Grand Rapids the citizens'
ticket, composed of hard money
republicans and democrats, is elect
ed. At Lansing, the republicans
elect the entire city ticket. At
Jackson, the democrats elect the
mayor and the republicans the
balan ce of the city ticket. At East
Saginaw, republicans elect the
mayor, the balance of the city ticket
is mixed.
John Logan Chipman is elect
ed judge of the superior court of
Detroit, Michigan, by a plurality
of 1,511 and a majority of 4G over
both the republican and national
candidates. Returns from the in
terior come in slowly. The ma
jority on the republican state tick
et is estimated at f:om five io ten
thousand over the democratic and
rreenback coalition ticket.

President Haj-es will not, after

the coming summer, and says that
he expects to pass most of the sea

The funeral of Madame Pat
terson Bonn parte took place in
Baltimore on Monday. The Rev.
Dr. Luftwich, of the' Presbyterian
church, offered a prayer at her
house, the only religious service
before the procession started for
Greenmount cemetery. The chief
jnourners -were her grandsons. Col.
Jerome Napoleon and Charles
Jeseph Bonaparte and the family
of the latter. At the grave Dr.
Luftwich read a burial service and
the interment took place. The
coffin bore the inscriptien: "Eliza
beth Patterson, born on the Gth of
February, 17S5; died, April 4th,
1S79." Interment was made in a
lot purchased by the lady herself,
many years ago, for her last rest
ing place. Deceased was a
daughter of a merchant of Balti
more, married Jerome Bonaparte,
brother of Xapoleon, on his visit to
America as captain of a frigate in
the year 1803. The alliance dis
pleased Napoleon, who had higher
designs for Ins family; so he anull
ed the marriage with I'ss Patter
son and caused his brother to marry
a daughter of the king of Wurtem
burg. Madame Patterson Bona
parte was a celebrity in her clay.

A more pathetic scene than
that of Garibaldi's arrival in Rome
has seldom been beheld. Shouts
raised as the train entered the sta
tion were speedily silenced on the
circulation of a report that the
general was ill. He was carried
from the train on a mattrass placed
on a large litter. Politics are
wholly disconnected with his com
ing, lie found that his health
was not improving at Caprera.
Replying to an aid who visited him
in the king s name, he said that lie
did not himself know the reason of
his visit. Some say that he came
to Rome to die.

The weather was so rough at
Port Townsencl on the 7th inst. that
the steamer Isabel, for Victoria,
with S00 sheep aboard, returned,
beinr unable to cross.
The damages done by the
recent freshets on the Skasrit were
very great. Millions of feet of
logs have been formed into solid
jams at the various points near the
mouth of the river, and these can
only be removed at at veiy low
staires of the river and during the
highest Juno tides.
The Mormon semi-annual con
ference is now in session at Salt
Lake, and has a daily attendance
of about 8,000. On Sunday hist
the principal speaker was George
Q. Cannon, delegate to congress
from Utah, who upheld polygamy
and said that ever'- man should
marry and keep marrying till every
woman had a husband. lie rea
soned thus as one of this great
family of Mormon polygamists, and
not as a member of congress, and
had a right to say as a father that
his daughters should thus marry.
This was his religion, and he would
make his children swear to live up
to it.
