Astoria, Oregon, Sunday Morning, April 6, 1879.
No. 81.
TELEGRAPHIC KEWS.
"Washington, April 4. Clar
ence King left to-day for Oregon
to attend to his cattle interests there
preliminary to entering upon his
now duties at "Washington.
New Yoiik, April 4-. A Shang
hai letter of Feb. 21st states that a
joint stock company of Chinese
merchants is beinij formed for the
manufacture of cotton cloths, and
very large mill will be built at
Shanghai. Tt is also proposed that
another woolen factory be started
tit Tien Tsin. Wool can be got
for the gathering, and their fleece
has not hitherto been properly
utilized.
London, April 4. A Vest Afri
can newspapers confirm the report
that two French gunboats had
landed a company of soldiers on the
British island of Matacong. The
British authorities at Sierra Leon
have sent a gunboat with a protest
to the French officer conduct
ing the occupation. The French
claim that the island was ceded
to them in 187S. The British
claim possession since 1820.
San Francisco, April 4. Al
though no scenes of violence have
vet occurred en account of the la
borers' strike, it now transpires
that serious attacks have been
made on some of those who de
clined to join the strikers. Last
.night several men employed
on -the sea-wall - -were rushetU
upon, kicked and beat into an in
sensible condition by strikers,
who fled, and all of these
men are in a precarious condition.
The force of police was increased,
and the strikers driven from the
immediate vicinity of the scene of
the work. The contractor an
nounces his intention of continu
ing work if he has to put "Win
chester rifles in the hands of em
ployees for self-protection.
A Startling Invention.
Two Hundred ords a Jlinulc Sent
Over One Cable Wire A "Whole XevtK
papcr Telegraphed in lEnlTan Hour.
From the Boston I'otst, March 11th.
. We are enabled to lay before our
readers this morning a piece of exclu
Mve intelligence which indicates that,
the old and new worlds are about to
hail the approaching dawn of cheap
telegraphy on land and under sea be
tween and throughout all the coun
tries of the civilized globe, but more
particularly across the Atlantic. The
American cable company, of New
York, has just closed, signed and
sealed one of the most important con
tracts that was ever connected with
the subject of telegraphing, and by
which the new company has secured
the exclusive right to the use of a new
invention or process for sending mes
sages by cable and otherwise. One
part7 to the contract guarantees to
send ten messages of twenty words
each per minute through the conduct
ing wire between Paris or London and
New Yrk.
This is the minimum speed stated in
the contract, but it is said that at the
maximum speed what could be sent in
thirty minutes would be equal to the
number of words contained in one
number of the London Times or the
New York Herald. And it is also as
serted that by this process an entire
number of either of the above-named
journals could be dispatched through
the cable from New York to London
and Paris, or from London to New
York, and be re-produced at those
points in fac simile, on a stereotyped
block or plate, complete and ready to
be printed from in thirty minutes, and
at a trifling expense. This would make
an average rate of about two thousand
words per minute.
What ras enabled this wonderful
process or invention to be brought to
perfection and put to pratical use, is
the new Bystem and inventions now
iihllfiritliirtiQiltikttitfifflliiii ihrr Mi
controlled 03' the American cable com
pany, tliesti latter instruments serving
as the basis of the new discovery.
The above-named company h:is an
exclusive right to the use on all of its
proposed cnhles of both of these most
wonderful inventions, but the general
agent owns and controls all the other
rights of both inventions in all countries
and for all purposes. It is now be
lieved that with the combined use of
these two inventions the cable com
pany will he able to reduce the tariff
for cable messages between New York
and the five different countries which
are to be connected directly by its
cables to from three to five cents per
word, and pay dividends of from eight
to twenty per cent, on its total capital.
We take great undisguised satisfact
ion in the fact that an American com
pany is to be the first to enjoy the dis
tinction and receive the benefits of
the introduction to the world of these
two inventions. They will be instru
mental in bringing about marvellous
advancements in the distribution of
news throughout the world. The
great importance of this discovery
may, perhaps, be better appreciated
from the additional statement that at
the moment of signing the document
of transfer to the American company
through its general agent, the inventor
was offered for the process so large a
sum as 400,000 13T the Anglo com
pany through imrties interested in the
latter.
Inasmuch as it could not have been
used by the Anglo company for lack
of the proper electric instruments, tiie
benefit of it would, of course, have
been lost to the world. A company
is to be formed in London, with large
capital, to bring over and operate all
other rights of the invention outside of
those held by the American cable
company. It is evident that ocean
telegraphy is yet in its infancy, and
Americans will have reason to feel
proud of seeing the premised revolu
tion in the business set on foot by a
company that bears their country's
name.

"Perfectly at Home'
Golden Rule.
Is it possible for our friend to "just
make himself at home " in our house,
as we so often invite and enjoin him
to do ? Something depends no doubt
on the friend, but more, we think, on
the home. If the guest be incapable
of forgetting his own home, and given
to contrasting unfavorably everything
that is unlike it in others ; or if he be
one of the unadaptive sort a human
' old cat," who is never at ease when
out of his accustomed haunts ; or if
he; more frequently, perhaps, this is
she; only goes about among friends,
to be entertained" in such cisc 3011
can't well make them at home, nor
avoid wishing them there ! On the
other hand, if you desert the pleasant
family quarters and xlant your friend
amid the unused fineries of the
"stiff best iioom;"
If you keep the children on dress
parade, and break up all their wonted
good times: if you palpably make a
decided difference in the family fare,
as if your friend came to learn the
qualifications of your cook book or to
judge of your ability to "keep, a hotel;"
if, in a word, your every-day domestic
life is so broken up that having a guest
implies a complete change in the inter
nal arrangements and economics of the
household, ho cannot, if a sensible and
sensative person, feel himself "at
home," for he will perceive that you
are not. Think what being "athoim."
means to 3ourself and try and let your
guest have something of that feeling.
You require a certain liberty and an at
mosphere of naturalness for your con
tentment; a knowledge that you are
not making any undue work or worry,
and a sort of slipper-and-dressing-gown
freedom of deportment
FOR YOUR COMFORT.
Your don't want our down-sitting
and up-rising too much planned out
for you. You expect to be courteous
and agreeable and punctual, and to
practice the rest of the household vir
tues as much as in you lies, but you
don't want to talk at a mark all the
time, nor have everything give way
forj-our entertainment. These isn't a
better rule of politeness in the world
than the rule called "golden." The
trouble is that we keep it too much for
ethical or "great moral" questions,
instead of turning it to use m the
every-day affairs of life. We can best
enable our friends to make themselves
at home by keeping it home-like for
them.
