Ways and means committee report ed on the petition for changing the names of the stree.s, recommending the changes, and the .city attorney was authorized to draft an ordinance for the purpose, commencing with Concomly as First Street. Shattuck in relation to the Oluey estate, was re ferred. It briefly states that the city of Astoria has no claim whatever upon the estate. We will publish the opinion m full in a short time. Mrs. Mary McFadtlni made her first appearance before the court yesterday on a charge of drunkenness. She was committed in default of the fine im posed. IF. J. Smith, an irrepressible drunk, was also committed to sober oil. A sister of Mr. M. D. Kant, of this city, will start from her home in Baden on or about the 15th instant, upon a journey of about 10,000 miles, to meet her brother in Astoria. It was put up by Mr. Robert Gree, they have painted it a little different from the rest, so that it may not lose its identity. A handsome steam launch launch ed herself atloat on the high water at Albina a few days ago. This little steamer is being built for Major Bol ton and intended for use in the con struction of the locks at the Cascades of the Columbia. Her length is 51 feet, beam 10 feet, depth of hold 5 feet. She will have a lQslO verticil engine and 7x44 vertical boiler. It is the intention to push her to com pletion within the next week or two, as Major Bolton has urgent use for her. Referring to and item yesterday wherein it was stated thirt the timbers of the old saw mill, on the opposite side of this peninsula, were used for fire wood, Judge Blanchard of Rainier informs us that this timber was possibly cut in the months of July, August or September. It has stood the tests of timber for over a quarter of a century in the mill, at all evente, and Mr. Blanchard says that timber cut m those months is always the best.
