See advertise ment. p The fishermen's meeting at Metro politan hall on Tuesday evening passed off quietly, and probably no trouble will arise this season. The Annie M. Smull entered this port May 20th, 1878. She went to aea yesterday with full cargo of wheat drawing lk feet, Brerihan towing, Hansen pilot. Mr. H. S. Shuster is furnishing his gallery in elegsnt style. A few new scenes making an attractive back-ground adds (much to tho effect of pictures. Mr. A. M. Johnson has just com pleted a fine lot of ails for .the schoon er Alpha, and is now busily engaged in making sails for tho use of .fisher men the coming season. The ship Ericsson, of 1,048 tons measurement, built at "Williamsburg, Long Island, in 1852, was sold at San Francisco last week to Capt. George Plummer and C. L. Dingley & Co., for $34,000. In a letter to Chaplain Stubb3 from the brother-in-law of Eugene L. Avery, known as Archie Brown, it is Uted that his mother who intended feo visit liiia before his execution will not come. - The schooner (Premier, oro of the Port Ludlow built three masted ahonners, was sold in San Francisco last week for 18,000. Her owners, .Jensen and others, will -continue her jn the coasting trade. It appears that Colfax is to -have baptist church. A corporation con sisting of five persons has been formed, with capital stock amounting to fifteen hundred dollars. The chief place of Tusiness is at Colfax, Whitman county. Yesterday morning was a cold but very pleasant one, but before noon the clouds darkened and Astoria's favorite supply so overwhelmed Mas by's anticipations that hardly enough sunshine was obtained by hirn to sup ply the demand. In consenuenco of the fact that Mr. Carl Adler must go below, in almiit. fifteen davs. and must have money, he has marked his goods down and is selling at reduced rates to make room for new troods. Astoria, March 4, 1879. Council met in regular session with President Gray presiding. Councilmen present Gray, Hahn, McCann, McGuire, Runey, Shively. In attendance auditor and clerk, It. H. Card well, and chief of police, W. J. Barry. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. PETITION'S. From N. F. Mudge, asking to be reimbursed in the sum of 8310 28 dis' count on warrants received in pay ment for work on roadway, was read and on motion laid on the table. From Geo. W. Rea, containing charges against H. B. Parker, police judge, was read and on motion re ferred to coieaiittee on health and police. From C. Gilbert, asking that the obstructions on West-9th street be re moved, was read and on motion re ferred to committee on streets and public vays. From Nick Clinton, .asking to be re imbursed in the sum -f -$25 00, dis count on warrants received in pay ment for work on roadway, was read and on motion laid on the table. From James W. Welch, asking that the xroPsed widening of the side walks on Water street, be postponed until the decision of the supreme court in the case of James Taylor vs. Welch heirs, was read and on motion petition granted. An ordinance to provide for regu lating and licensing bar-rooms and drinking jfcop, ras read the first and second time, and on motioa referred to committee on health and police. An ordinance to regtflate and licen9 certain places of amusement, -vcas read the first and second time, and -on motion referred to the committee on health and police. An ordinance authorizing the audi tor and clerk to draw warrant- for expense of tho board of delegates of A. F. D. was read the first and second time and on motion referred to the committee on fire and water. An ordinance to provide for the working and collection of road tax within the city limits, was read the first and second time, and on motion, referred to committee on streets and public ways: An ordinance making an appropria tion out of the general fund forpur chase of hose for Astoria fire department, was read the first and second time and by unanimous consent the rules were suspended and the ordinance read the third time and passed. An ordinanco making an appropria tion out of the general fund for the engine Co. No. 2, was read the first purchasing of a Silsby heaterfor Rescue and second time and by unanimous consent the rules were suspended and the .ordinance read the third time and passed. Councilman McGuire offered a reso lution authorizing and empowering the chief of police to appoint and re move oflioerc of the police force, by and with the consent of a majority of the council, which resolution was adopted. On motion of councilman Runev the city attorney was instructed to draft an ordinance reducing the salary of that officer to $10 per month, the same to take effect April 1, 1879. Councilman Hahn nominated hos. Logan for superintendent of streets to fill the vacancy caused by. the removal of R. F. Wickham. Mr. Logan was duty confirmed as such superintendent of streets. CLAIMS. Several persons in thePuyallup valley will raise the "weed" and it will be manufactured into plugs and cigars. It grows very luxuriently in that region; also in the valleys of Chehalis and White rivers. The question of its flavor remains to be decided, but we imagine it will prove very strong.
