WRITTEN FOR THE ASTORIA In. the bright torrid zone and warm glowing lands 'Where the biue waters break on the coraj gem'd strands And the breeze softly signs through the sweet orange grove That Nature intended for pleasure and love, Lived a beautiful Creole in Nevis. Pale Diana's bright lamp hung aloft in the sky, And paled the red glow of the bright firefly. And the boats on the bay seemed to dance in the sheen Of the silvery light, of night's lovely queen, As she hung o'er the lland of Nevis. . I sat with a friend, and drank in with 'delight Each beautiful scene of a tropical night, And a sweet plaintive strain lent Its charm to the ear And hung on the zephyrs, its tones full and clear, 'Twas the voice of the Creole of Nevis. I tossed on my couch, and in vain strove to rest, A thought strangely sweet, woke a chord in my breast, And thin, airy shaped fancy kept busy the brain At painting the angel that 'woke the sweet strain On that bright Easter-eve in Nevis. At length, lul'ed to sleep by the murmuring breeze That sighed its wild notes through the fan like palm trees, And the fresh balmy air, through the tall lattice borne, JL dreamily slept, till awakened at morn, By the sweet singing Creole of Nevis. .She stood like a statue of marble so fair. Her shoulders half screened by her long raven hair, With a face that would rival an angel of bliss. And pale as the muslin she wore in her dress On that bright Easter morning in Nevis- (Enraptured I gazed on her beautiful form, As aerial :is sea-foam whipped up by a stonnf And her fair bosom heaving with love or af fright, And modesty shone in the eyes black as night, Of the lovely young Creole of Nevis. .She thought I was sleeping ; with half opened eyes I motionless lay, not to cause her surprise ; Then retiring, she noiselessly tripped o'er the floor And gracefully swept through the wide open door, And I thought I was dreaming in Nevis ' 1 met her again 'neath the pomegranate's shade, A mlsche.vious smile on her countenance played, j But I guessed by each glance, that she'd fit fully dart That cupid had rapped at the door of her heart On that bright Easter morning in Nevis. ay as the flowers that bedeck May-day 1110111, And bright as the dew that bespangles the thorn. And airy and fresh as the sweet morning breeze That zephyr-like float oe'r the Carribean seas To her own native Island of Nevis. And blithe as the hazel that grows in the vale With sweet melting eyes when she'd list to love's tale. And a red coral lip to invite the warm kiss With a smile that would tempt an angel from bliss, As the tlirall of the Creole of Nevis. Those bright happy days hold their grip on my mind, -Through lifes ruffled se:is, and each varying wind, And the freshest green spot on my memory's record "When I chisp to my heart, with her own sweet accord.
