The Pacific Coast Steamship Com pany's steamer arrived at her berth in this city night before last, and expected to start on the trip to Portland at dawn yesterday morning, but the Port land Colonial Assembly had neglected its duty and permitted a dense fog to settle over the land (and water) which persistently refused to lift until one o'clock p. m., which prevented the Ancon from proceeding on her voyage. Some of the passengers were indiscreet -enough to wax warm in condemnation of the pilot, Capt. Hoyt, but their comments were entirely uncalled for, -and as Mr. Hoyt as a resident of Port land cannot consistently (nor incon sistently) be accused of detaining the steamer at Astoria purposely, but this is the place she ought to stop at never theless, for the purpose of tranferring freight and passengers. The Elder was from 10 a. m. Monday until 8 a. m. Thursday coming from Portland on her last voyage. Why not essentially damn Capt. Bx-own for that? It is all very nice to cuss and froth at the pi lots, but gentlemen; we assure you all that 3tou are mistaken. The only cor rect way to remedy this evil is to make Congress grant as many favors to As toria as are asked for in behalf of Portland, and decide at once with us that what Oregon wants, and ivhat Oregon must liave, is a terminals of the trans-continental railroad at Astoiia, and not A station at Portland. We honestly believe that if people who have the interest of Oregon at heart, (not selfish, personal interests, but the sjood of the whole state), would go to work here in Astoria and incorporate a company to build a railroad from Astoria to Salem, Albany, or Eugene City, and act bona 'jtiLdy in earnest about the matter, that Congress would give such company the grant of lands given to the As toria and McMinnville branch rail- road, and this company could in a rea sonable length of time succeed in en listing aid from the Central Pacific, or the Northern Pacific to build the road. We say we honestly believe this to be the fact; we say further that we are firmly of opinion that such work would be accomplished inside of three years. The effort is worthy of a trial. That grant of lands made for the benefit of Oregon, Portland's selfish interest has deprived the State from receiving any benefit from. It has been lost to the original projectors, and will never be revived so long as the brains, influence and money of Portland can find no better employment than to be contin ually growling at a few pilots (bar and liver), who chance to live in Astoria. If "common talk" could be sold at the maximum value placed upon it by members of the wheat ring in Port land, who are engaged in smuggling American vessels out of their just em ployment, while this coasting trade is carried on between Portland and As toria in British bottoms, enough has been waisted already to complete 100 miles of railroad from Astoria to Sa lem. It is quite time that Astorians, and citizens of Oregon and eastern Washington territory generally, shook olF the fetters that bind them to Port land, quit listening to the cursing of honest men like these pilots, and went about their business in a systematic manner to open up the interior to com munication with the only seaport the State has, where vessels of the deep est draft can and do safely enter and find anchorage room for as many as ever visit any one port at one time,and thus silence the grabbers who are speculating off the products of our local and domestic industries by pay in:; SO to 90 cents a bushel for wheat, when it is known to be worth $1.40 to $1.50 per bushel. We are sick and t;?ed of such d foolishness as Port end plays upon the people. Flint & Co. . bankers in New York have failed. Liabilities, $115,000. The New York Herald lias paid 1,000 damages for inserting a personal advertisement. Gen. O. O. Howard was on the field in xerson when Joseph passed in his checks. The steamer towing the Oleopatra obleisk was compelled to abandon the same olFCape Finisterre, in a gale last Sunday night. The crew on the raft were transferred to the steamer, but five men were lost. Respectable Thieves. It is reported that the losers by the forgeries of Oilman in New York city, arc listening to the p 'opositions for a compromise made by his relatives. The fact indicates that the forger is in some safe place of refuge, and is try ing to purchase exemption from the punishment he deserves by offering to pay back to his victims a part of their losses. It is not surprising that the men de sire to get some of their money back; and they think the only way they can do it is to yield to the terms of the criminal. But if they so compound this feloiry, they will really damage their own interests in the long run, and inexcusably offend the public mor als. The banks and other moneyed institutions have often been too ready to do this sort of thing letting off de faulters in return for a part of their stealings. As a consequence, the busi ness of forgery and embezzlement, es pecially when followed by men who hold what are called highly respectable positions, has been comparatively safe and very lucrative. All they have to do when caught is to compromise the unpleasant matter with their victims, by making them good for a percentage of their losses, and then retire from public notice for a time. What must be the feelings of the smaller thieves, the criminals the po lice hound, when they have stolen a little money, when they see the escape of Gilman, the respectable thief, who taught in Sunday school, and passed around the contribution box in the church, while he was engaged in his enormous forgeries'? It is men like him who most deserve the punishment of the law, and it is weak sentimen tality to grant them pity, and sell them immunity because they wear good clothes and have polite associations and tender susceptibilities. Enjoying so great privileges, they have less ex case for committing crime, and their abuse of their reputation for probiety makes their offence the more flagrant. It seems, accord.ng to a corres pondent of the Graphic, that the forger, Gilman, expended his stolen money "in pleasant,artistic,and beau tiful family life.'' It was better for him to do that, we allow, than to squander it in debauchery, but it makes very little difference to a man who h:is lost his money how the thief spends it. Moreover, it rather aggra vates the man's grief when the reason the thief was ab'e to steal the money w;is because his family life was so beautiful and artistic.
