CVJ i gJxs gaits stawtfaxu ASTORIA Oct. 12, IS77 My Mother al the Gate. Oh ! there's many a lovely picture On Memory's silent wall, There's many a cherished image That I tenderly recall. The sweat home of my childhood, "With its singing brooks and birds; 'The frlencls tiiat grew beside me, "With their loving loolcs and words. The flowers that decked the wildwood. The roses fresh and sweet. The blue-bells and the daisies That blossomed at my feet. Ah, all are very precious, And often come to me Like the breezes from a better land Beyond life's troubled sea. But the sweeie.t, dearest picture That memory can create, Is the image of my mother, 31 y mother at the gate. The arrival of Stanley's little Land of half-starved 3 half-naked, foot-sore, worn-out men at the mouth of the Congo a couple of months ago was an event of more than passing moment. For years men have been putting forth every effort to do what Stanley has just accomplished. Speke and Grant and Burton and Baker and Living stone did their best, did all they could, and noble, indeed, was the work they jjcrformed; but after it was done so much more remained that the subject seemed hardly touched. The latest, and in some respects the greatest of all, was Cameron, who exhibited an example of patient investigation and diligent research before almost unap proached, and which well might chal lenge the admiration alike of the sci entific and of the unlearned. But oven Cameron, indomitable as was his energy, and heroic as was his persever ance', was forced to turn aside from the course which Stanley, through a thousand dangers by land and water, through perils of climate, of deadly fevers, of disease in a hundred subtle shapes, and through deaths lurking on every hand, has just followed to the bitter end. The political friends of secretary Schnrz are naturally reluctant to pres3 his claims to the vacant Senator-ship, and as they recognize that such an ap pointment would represent the aboli tion of partizan supremacy, they think that the movement to accomplish it should come from the democracy. In this they are quite right, says the Globe, and if the democracy really wish to re ciprocate that good feeling, they will prepare a simple form of petitition, which could be signed by all classes of citizens. Such a petition should state that the petitioners, representing all shades of political opinion, requested the appointment of Carl Schurz to the Senatorial vacancy on account of his eminent fitness for the position, and as a recognition of the supremacy of patriotism over party. We believe that the petition would be signed lnT ovory reputable citizen of Missouri, and would carry a moral influence that would be simply irresistable. Postmaster General Key has taken Lis punishment like a man for having apologized for his treason, even thon-irli the apology "was more in fun than in earnest, and we notice that he has not indulged in any more repent ance in public since leaving Kew Hampshire. On the oilier hand, Wade Hampton, -who told the jeople of Illinois that they stood in the same light before histoiy as he did, and that they merely "went with their State," has been applauded as a jia troit, and has had Ins boots licked in to lustrous effulgence by such editors as those of the Chicago Tribune and the Cincinnati Commercial. We must accordingly look on it as a settled prin ciple that the lost cause -was iuite as good as the cause which won, and that there is no difference, either in morals or patriotism, between the attempt to ; destroy the country and the attempt to save the country. The establish- ment of this idea ought to reconcile a great many Tilden. people to the defeat of SS-JTewspapcr advertising is now! recognized by busine.:aniihfiVJiigiaHh in ! their own wnros, as the rno.t effective nifunb for tecurin ii- thpir uare a wide ' recognition of their lm-ritc.
