"We visited Portland this week, upon a mission quite distinct from business, and wished to get through the city if possible without any unnecessary talk relative to the rivalry existing between them and us (Portland and Astoria), but it was of no use. The sight of a dozen vessels and three or four steam ships there seemed to infuse the "colo ny" with extra bitter hatred of Astoria, and in spite of all that our cotempor aries, the Bee and Standard, have had to say expressive of the friendship pro fessed for Astoria and the balance of the State, we can name men owning in the aggregate at least two tenths of the assessed valuation of Multnomah county who will defiantly tell you that "Astoria shall never load a ship we'll go to Tacoma first!" "Astoria shall never have its Marine Hospital re instated." "Astoria shall not be a port of entry any longer than we can consolidate the two districts." "As toria shall not have all the pilots after this winter. " "Astoria shall never see the Cascade canal opened." And so on, ad fin ad nauseum. Some of the most absurd ideas, real vagaries, are afloat in Portland which are so remote in foundation from truth, common sense, decency and justice, that it seems a pity to pay printers for setting up the type to refute the ridiculous scandals. We have barely time at present to say that we left for Astoria by the Chief, Wednesday evening at six o'clock, and reached home yesterday mommg a few minutes past seven, fully and completely disgusted with "the Portland lobby", which is com posed of 'gentlemen and scholars' as well as loafers; aristocrats as well as plebians, sensible men as well as fools, and just mark these werds: They will beat Astoria to death, unless Asto rians wake up, and if they do beat us, fellow citizens, bear in mind this one fact that we have been beaten for the want of friends at headquarters. Portland has her lobby at home, in San Francisco, in Washington City, in New York, London, Liverpool, and elsewhere. How is it with us ? Where are the friends to urge our claims ? What newspaper, besides this one, dare say a word in condem nation of the heartless policy that would ruin us financially, and destroy the prospects of a commercial city which has a region of country backing it, to make it as rich and as important to the country as the finest city in the world ? Will the citizens of Oregon submit to all this, and for the sakc of a Northern Pacific Railroad station at Portland, surrender all the claims of the state to a termhnis and a sea-port at Astoria ! Portland says, Yes ! but the wisdom of the broad valleys of the Wallamet and Columbia will emphati cally decide thafrpoint in the negative. The interior of this great and fertile region of country is in full accord with Astoria, we .verily believe; but, Astorians should recollect that omnip otence helps those who sometimes help themselves. The Bridire at Omaha. Jay Gould, Sydney Dillon, and other framed Credit Mobilierites own, beside the Tall Tower and a few other things, the Union Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific bridge across the Missouri river at Omaha and Council Bluffs. That bridge, 2,750 feet long, rests on ten pairs of cast iron tubes, or piers, 110 feet from bedrock to the level of the bridge. The tubes are three inches thick, and filled with con crete Or more properly rubble stone and cement. There are eleven spans, 250 feet each, composed of cast and wrought iron. - The deflection of the span it is said, is four inches. The trains that passed over that bridge, passed over at a snail's pace, and gave no jar to the superstructure that would properly test its unsafety. Recently fortunately there was no train on the bridge a playful western breeze tossed two spans of this bridge into the current. The spans are said to weigh 250 tons a ton to the lineal foot. The papers say they were car ried off by a cyclone, sirocco, tornado, or some other desperate wind force. The fact that light frame shanties in the neighborhood escaped is against the cyclone theory, unless it was an accommodating cyclone that concen trated all its force and venom on that ill-starred bridge. In fact, the ele ments seem to have a special antipa thy to the Credit Mobilier arrange ments at Omaha, for the Missouri river is cutting in and threatening the Union Pacific machine shops on the river bottoms with inundation. The parties are trying to dam the incoming flood by a riprapping of loose rock that offers no great obstruction to a torrent running at ten miles an hour. They have been damning the Whole thing ti'l they are hoarse. But the bridge at Omaha is unsafe for travellers. It can be proved by the length of the bridge, the length of spans, the swaying of tall, unsubstan tial, oscillating cast iron piers, the filling, the crystalization, and material defects of the structure that it is liable to collapse at any moment. It has been reported to Pish com missioners Redding, Throckmorton and Parrel that the salmon laAV is be ing openly violated on the Sacramento river by corporations as well as indi viduals. A factory at Collinsville is said to have canned 50,000 seed sal mon since the first of August, and to be running night and day, a ten-ton sloop gathering the catch from the fishing boats. Other canneries are also reported to be in active operation. The commissioners are convinced that if the river communities do not take sume steps to enforce the law, so as to allow the seed salmon coming in from the ocean to reach the spawning ground, the stock of fish which has cost the state so much money to ob tain will soon be exhausted. Letters from the McClond river to the com missioners report that there is not one salmon taken in that stream where there were ten taken last year. The detectives are doing all they can to bring the guilty parties to justice, but they feel the want of a river patrol to detect and overtake the offenders. The lovers of stump speaking in Ohio are about to be gratified with a rare treat in the department of politi cal science. Hon. George H. Pendle ton has accepted the challenge of Gen. Garfield to travel with him and dis cuss the pending issues in the election campaign of that state. Their meet ings will, no doubt, be entertaining, but the Cincinnati Enquirer doubts the propriety or usefulness of these joint debates. It remarks very truth fully that "the newspaper has outrun these discussions and their capacity for individual or party advantage, es pecially when the- people before whom the discussion is held are not the jury to pronounce at once upon the merits of the contestants." New Orleans proposes a new and shorter cut to the ocean by a ship ca nal cut through to Barataria bay an estuary of the sea that penetrates far into the land on the south coast of Louisiana. The distance from New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico by this route would be only fifty-eight miles, and the cost of digging the canal about $5,000,000.
