Desperate in a fit of Ab
straction. A 2few York dispatch says the
Mustang rider, we are glad to see,
proposes to repeat his attempt to ride
300 miles, in fifteen hours. His throw
ing the blame of his failure mainly
on the rain and heavy track is doubt
less just; but wo are glad to see that
he admits his mistake in attempting
to ride for such a length of time with
out proper nourishment.
A financial agreement of the Pa
cific old and new stockholders has
been arranged, the latter promising
to reimburse the old directors for any
funds advanced to the company, and
on this condition the property is to
be turned over to the present holders
of stock, so that the annual election
will be proceeded with on the 31st.
A new contract, or lease, will be
made with the Panama road and the
two companies will work in harmony
Five fishing vessels and forty
nine lives have been'lost in the Glou
cester fisheries this year.
It-is reported that Grant said to
Kellogg if he (Kellogg), wcredischarg
ing his duties at home, instead oi be
ing here asking for troops, peace
would be maintained. The President
also added with some vehemence,
that he was tired of being bored with
Louisiana affairs and didn't want to
be perplexed with them any more,
and hoped Kellogg wonld attend to
his duty. The ex-ofiicers of State
here regard the rebuking as just.
The Postmaster General will soon
send South trustworthy agents to keep
the National Republican Committee
informed in regard to campaign news.
The House committee on Territo

Ex-doorkeererFitzlmr'li, when 3ie

away witli him certain valuable rec -
ords. He also -went to the document ,
room and asking to be hown several in-
dex boxes showing the number, of doc-1
uniciiis and books drawn by and be-
longing to each member, and these be
ing produced, he coolly took them and ,
placing them under his arm, walked
off. All efforts to get them back have
been unavailing. Cox, Speaker pro j
tern, has directed the searent-at-arms !
of the House to take steps to recover j
the records. Fitzhugh says lie haa
'imjpctttant information which will!

It is probable that, tmtil the arriv
al of Judge Pierrepont at the Court of
St. James, nothing of a definite char
acter will be done by our government
in relation to the existing misunder
standing upon the provisions of the
extradition treaty, which are at pres
ent altogether inoperative.
Referring to the interruption of
Senator Mitchell by Senator Merri
mon, when speaking in favor of Sar
gent's bill to restrict Chinese migra
tion, the Chronicle says: "Senator
Merrimon interrupted the speaker to
make the inquiry whether any por
tion of the Chinese on this coast were
naturalized, his impression being ap
parantly that if they could be per
suaded to take kindly to the idea of
becoming American citizens all the
evils of the imigration would be neu
tralized and the objections to the Asi
atic influx would be triumphantly
answered. This furnishes an unpleas
ant and almost disheartening illustra
tion of the difficulty of making the
eastern mind comprehend the real
aspects of this terrible problem. "
