county last week saved SloO by taking his
local paper, the Mercury, and there is a man
in this county, near lirownsville, who told us,
a short time ago, that he had made anbO-acre

crat, lie had been wanting for a long time to
buy an 0, adjoining his farm, but could getno
track of the owner, xvho was a non-resident of
the State, and finally saw it advertised for
tax sale in tho Democrat. Jle attended the
sale and bought it for a nominal sum, and is
now the owner of it Alb'inj Democrat.

Russian paper announces that a belief in the
approaching end of the world has seized on
the Cossacks of the Don. Many, especially

smallest village may have its own priest and
church. Tho Russian paper fails to stato
whether its delinquent subscribers have taken

would be stronger evidence of tho approach of
the Millennium than any thing that a super
stitious Cossack could advance.
Don't Read Advertisements. Occasionally

into an ad. it soon becomes the talk of the
neighborhood, and if the people do not read
ads. how do they drop' on errors with such
facility ? The other day the advertisement of
the Centennial Restaurant appeared, in which
the word " eating" was set up " fating," where
upon "we were duly notified of the error bj
seven JSalinasites and one Chinaman, and last
ly, the Monterey Herald felt in duty bound to

every department of business, and no one ap
preciates its truth more fully than S. J I.
Thompson. Some time since he received the
Agency, for this county, of the Cunningham
"(iarden City Clipper Plow," and immediate
ly advertised the same in our paper. Green
. Smith, I'sq.. a patron of the Gazette, saw
the advertisement and forthwith rushed to
Thomj son's and purchased four of these ccle-
brated plows which at once have sprung into
popular favor. IS o mater how good and valu
able an article may be, a merchant or dealer
may keen it upon his shelves, or in his store
for months, or even years, and but lew will
know anything of its good qualities, unless he
advertises, lor years Mr. Ihompson carried
on business here, and spent but little for
advertising. ithin the past two years his
business has increased nearly double, and he
