Sax Fr vncisco, July 2, 1872.
My dear old friend, Samuel Corwin I have
ub doubt but you will bo much surprised on
receiving this lotter, but, perhaps, not more so,
or more gratified, than I was to hoar frpra
you. Tho manner in which I hoard from you,
and learned of your whereabouts, is this: I
happened to bo looking over an Oregon news
paper and noticed your name, as Representa
tive elect, from Tillamook county. The thrill
of pleasuro'which I experienced on rcai&ig, is
indiscribablo. Tho many. acts of kindness
which I received at your haefe Ion& years ago
haye never &oen forgotten, 6twithstandlng
our correspondence- has boon broken for 17
yBarg- Well, Samv I won't attompt to grvo
you moro than the outlines of what has fran
spiredwitb me since wo last corresponded.
So many incidonts of the past, hnvhich you
and I wero connected, crowd upon my mind
that JE eannot think or writo-of myself. Does
your mind ever revert to tho past, "when wo
first met how you took mo in as a partner,
whnn those who oucht to have been my best
friends throw off on me how wo got snowed
in and had to lrvo on potaftoqs straight for six
weeks how good that grizzloy moat tasted
what a disgraceful retroat wo mado from our
poor innocent Jack, when w& thought wo woro
besieged by a grizzfcy. Woll, Sam, those
ovents of 16-)2 frequently furnish subject mat
tor for my thoughts, and, as I am writing to
you, crowd unon my mind, but I will dismiss
them for the present to gwo place to that which
Tyill, perhaps, bo of greator interest to you.
1 pockotod eleven thousand dollars out of tho
"Deep Claim" you gave mo in Maraposa, and
started for homo in Juno, 18oo. I invested
four thousand dollars in real estate it this
city, und loft-it in care of McLanor our, old
cabin mate. My property horo has yielded
mo a handsome income, and quadrupled in
value. I went into business in NoW York cfty,
in which I was very successful sold out two
years ago, since which tinio I have boea trav-
olincr throuirh, tho European countries. You?
'know I used to have a weakness for traveling;
well.it has been gratified to my heart's con
tent. While in Franco I was taken with tko
simill-nox. The lady of the inn told mo that 1
1 was fortunate to take tho disease at that plao.
as thoro was an oM smalt-pox doctor near by
who never failed t cure, no matter how had
the diseaso; and sure enough, I began to re
cover within four hours after commencing to
take tho medicine, and in twenty-four hours'
1 folt quito well. I was so much olated with
tho magical effects of tho medicine that I was
determined, if possible,to obtain tho formula,
in which 1 succeeded,. &y paying handsomely'
and promising not t divulge it in France;
1 soo iroiu Urogon papers that you have tho
disease among you." The enclosed package
contains tho formula "and sufficient material
for family use. I- Iulvo cured all tho cases
thatldiavocomoin contract with, and'fih'dit
an infallible curoand provontivo. When yott
answer this, I will forward sufficient of tho
material to make you a fortune, as JChavo am
ple, and rest assured I reciprocate past favors.
I will closo for tho present and await anxi
ously your answer. jJiroct to San Francisco,
as 1 will remain hero-about two months.
Yours etc., lSAACltlCUAltDSON.
