On Saturday, Dec. 18, Florence Elks Lodge #1858 hosted its annual Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest. Celebrating
its 50th anniversary with its 2021 event, the competition was for children ages 8-13. The event was held at the Siuslaw
Elementary School gymnasium, with Elks members and athletes offering coaching. Look for individual results in the
Friday, Dec. 24, Siuslaw News Scoreboard.

The Mapleton Middle
School girls basketball team
traveled to Crow on Dec. 18
for their league’s champion-
ship tournament. The Sail-
ors went 3-0 and came home
middle school champions of
the Mountain West Confer-
ence.
In the first game of the day,
Mapleton beat Mohawk 25-
16. This put the Sailors into
the semifinals. In that game,
they squeaked by Alsea 16-14.
Siletz awaited Mapleton in the
championship game.
Mapleton Coach Lou Bur-
russ knew the championship
game was going to be a chal-
lenge for his team.
