When Viking cross country/track and field coach Chris Johnson celebrated his double state championship victories at Lane Community College on Nov. 10, his focus was on just two things, leading his two cross country teams to the top of the 4A pack. He accomplished both those goals. At the same time, he solidified his spot on the short list of the greatest coaches, of any sport, in Ore- gon high school sports history. The two titles bring Johnson’s total to 16 state championships won as a head coach of an OSAA sanctioned sport. Those 16 titles include nine for girls cross country, six for boys cross country and one for boys track and field — and doesn’t include the champi- onship he won as an assistant for the Siuslaw track team. The two wins on Saturday give Johnson sole possession of the No. 4 spot on the list of all-time victories for an Oregon high school head coach. “I don’t like to put a bunch of pressure on kids by keeping track of numbers like these,” said Johnson. “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t on my mind though recently, because people keep bringing it up.” Before the state meet, Johnson shared the No. 4 spot with three other coaches: Steve Sheehy of Union, Bob Latham of Bend and Ron Smith of Henley and Lost River, all three of which have 14 titles and are also cross country and/or track and field coaches like Johnson. With one more state title, Johnson will move into a three-way tie for second most of all time. The number one spot will be a bit harder to reach. That sport is held by current Jesuit coach Tom Rothenberger, who has a remarkable 26 state titles in his long and sto- ried career; 14 for girls cross country, six for boys cross country and three each for boys and girls track and field. With all the young talent that can be found on the trail and track for Siuslaw, it is only a matter of time before Johnson’s remarkable total gets even larger. Underdog or Favorite? When Oregon or any oth- er Power 5 football program plays a team from a lower division, they are generally overwhelming favorites to win the game. These games are played at the home of the Power 5 team. The crowds are cheering for their team to win — and they usually win. The opponent is re- warded with a guaranteed sum of money for their ath- letic department. This mon- ey helps them provide oth- er sports opportunities for their student/athletes. When the March Mad- ness bracket comes out for the NCAA basketball tour- nament, the number one seed is paired with a num- ber 16 seed. Until 2018, when 16th seed UMBC beat number one seed Virginia, no 16th seeded team had ever won an NCAA tourna- ment game. Upsets are ex- citing unless it is your team being upset. In 1968, I was the quar- terback for Warrenton High School. With less than one minute remaining I threw an interception while trying to score while trailing Scap- poose 24-20. Unlike Siu- slaw’s Ian Sissel’s decision to fall on the ball following his interception against Junction City, their defend- er elected to run with his interception and fumbled the ball back to our team. Two plays later, I threw a touchdown pass to secure a 26-24 upset of Scappoose. Much like Braydon Thorn- ton’s catch and score amidst Junction City defenders in the fourth quarter come- back, my receiver battled the B&G Club Elementary Program site at Siuslaw Elementary, 2221 Oak St. Cost is $40 for members, $65 for non-members and free for children whose parents are active duty military. Until I watched the game field I, thought I had thrown a perfect pass to a wide open receiver to win the game. However, I was playing without my much needed glasses that were broken in the first quarter. All the players were blurry as I re- leased the ball. Our upset of Scappoose in 1968 was re- peated at their field in 1969. In that game, we held on as Scappoose failed to score with a first and goal from the eight yard line with less than one minute remaining. In 1969, we also upset the Seaside Seagulls on their Homecoming Game. Both Scappoose and Seaside were three times our size. The role of underdog car- ries far less stress than the favorite in most sporting events. If you are the favor- ite, then you are expected to win. That being said, congrat- ulations to Siuslaw High School on being the number one seed in the 3A football play-offs. With the number one ranking, the Vikings will be favored in all their remaining games. There See TIME page B3
