SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, JULY 17, 2021 | 3B Marine education center in Newport to reopen Aug. 1 The Visitor Center at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport plans to reopen on August 1 after a nearly 17-month closure due to COVID-19. Tickets to reserve one- hour slots to enter the Visitor Center can be purchased at beav.es/hat- fieldvctickets. Reservations can be made for times as far ahead as September 30. If the max- imum capacity has not been reached, people can buy tickets online at the door using their cell- phones. “The temporary $3 admission fee for those ages five and older is nec- essary to help pay for extra staffing and public health measures including enhanced cleaning,” said Maureen Collson, the Visitor Center manager. No more than 50 visi- tors will be allowed inside per hour, with 25 people entering every half hour. They will have to follow a one-way loop and stay six feet from others. Per guidelines from the state and Oregon State University, face coverings will not be required; how- ever, people are welcome to wear them if they wish. Athletes love to come to Hayward Field and participate in track meets. The spectators support all the athletes competing with knowledge and enthusiasm for their efforts. Autzen Stadium and Knight’s Arena have vocal crowds with decibels of noise. The lack of spectators at the Olympics will tone down the electricity that accompanies the Olympics. Watching on television will even be less exciting. It will be interesting as to how the athletes will adjust to empty venues. When the professional and collegiate games were played, there were cardboard fan cutouts and crowd noise on loud- speakers. How will the Olympic organizers try to generate intensity? Not all sports require crowd noise for superior athletic performances. There are many that may not need the noise but thrive on it when it is there. It is in those sports we may not see the truly great record-breaking perfor- mances. I watch some Olympic sports because nowhere else can I see them except every four years. The sports I watch every season are not those I intend to watch during the 2021 Olympic Games.
