FEC Gallery to show work from kids with ‘heart & soul’ This summer, students attending the Siuslaw Ele- mentary School Summer Program will participate in building their own kid- sized city with a bank, city hall, animal shelter, restau- rant, garden, theater, store, gym, observatory, library, art gallery and fire station. Students will create the walls, floors, and functions of the city, and no city is complete without an art gallery! Throughout the summer students will create, ex- plore, and complete art that will fill our city with joy, imagination, and creativity. A display of their cre- ations will be available for viewing at the Florence Events Center in August. The Florence Event Center’s Gallery Committee, housed under the new FACE (Flor- ence Arts, Culture & Enter- tainment) non-profit that supports the efforts of the Florence Events Center, for- merly known as the Friends of the Florence Events Cen- ter, will be helping celebrate the participating students’ show and reception. This summer school program is led by Siuslaw Elementary Music Teacher Amanda Sarles. The summer school team is comprised of 11 elemen- tary school teachers and staff who, after this pan- demic year, were excited to keep the school doors open for students to grow in de- cision making, inventive- ness, language and math concepts in action, as well as positive self-esteem de- velopment. Visual arts course in- struction is being head- ed by Artist and Siuslaw School educator, Kassy Keppol. Keppol studied at Hollins University receiving her master’s degree in Chil- dren’s Illustration and is the owner and creative behind the local arts organization, Dragon Art. Through this program, Keppol brings her professional art and educa- tion expertise to our local youth. The students’ works will be for sale, with proceeds going to the students. The City of Florence En- vironmental Manage- ment Advisory Commit- tee (EMAC) invites the community to partici- pate in its 2021 Backyard Home Composting pro- gram to evaluate home composting practices for the Florence area. EMAC is soliciting nine City of Florence households to try one of three different composter types. These composters will be distributed to households to try and then keep, but there is a catch. Each participat- ing household will be required to evaluate the composter received and share their composting experience. Participants must ac- tively utilize the com- poster and agree to fill out and return a ques- tionnaire upon receipt of the composter, again after three months, and then after six months. The in- formation received from the program participants will be used to determine if there are specific com- posting practices that work well, or not so well, in Florence. The results of the program will be pub- licized. The three home com- posters being tested are the Earth Machine, the Miracle Grow Small rotating compost bin, and a tiered worm composting farm (EMAC will supply the worms). Each has dif- ferent methods of use, size and production levels. Whether you are new to composting or have been composting for de- cades, if you would like to try one of the composters and give feedback, con- sider applying for the program. Home composting re- duces the amount of food waste and yard debris go- ing to the landfill which in turn saves money in disposal costs, hauling and landfill tipping fees. Keeping yard debris and food waste out of the landfill helps reduce the amount of methane a landfill produces, a pow- erful greenhouse gas. When people success- fully compost, they then have free soil amendments that they would other- wise have to purchase at a garden supply store.
