“We were determined to host
the state meet at Siuslaw because
we knew we could do it right.
We have a fantastic facility —
and props to our community for
that,” said Athletic Director and
coach Chris Johnson of the 4A
State Track and Field Champi-
onships this past weekend (May
21-22). Several athletes placed
was fully decked out with Amer-
ican flags around the entire sta-
dium thanks to Shannon Sheets
and the Kiwanis Club, and the
event started on Saturday with a
special flyover courtesy of one of
Florence’s own retired colonels.
“We could do some things that
they can’t do at Hayward Field,”
explained Johnson, “and there
will never be a flyover at a state
meet again; there will never be
a victory lap at the state meet
again. There will never be kids
getting championship T-shirts
and huge bouquets of beautiful
flowers ever again.
“So, that was what we wanted
to do, because the kids who were
here two years ago lost a whole
year of their career, and this was
a shortened season. We were de-
termined to make this the best
state meet that we could host.”

Vik wrestlers shows strong in first meet, sweep Marshfield duals
By Zeahna Young

Siuslaw’s wrestling team par-
ticipated in its first two meets
over the weekend. The first,
which was held on Friday (May
21) at Sutherlin, began as a rare
outdoor round-robin invitation-
al tournament. However, about
two hours into the evening meet,
the air became too damp for the
mats to stay dry, so all partici-
pants came together to transport
everything inside to finish the
meet. Fortunately, ordinances
had just changed, allowing the

quantity of people at the event to
be inside.
“When the mats got slick, they
were very quick about moving
things into the gym,” said Siu-
slaw coach Neil Wartnik. “I just
thank God that the governor’s
mandate allowed the wrestlers
to wrestle without masks. As I
was entering the day, just look-
ing at it, I thought, ‘Wow, what
a blessing that we have this op-
portunity!”
While no team scores were
kept, the meet allowed the
Sophomore Mason Buss, undefeated thus far, prepares to pin
his competitor from Oakland.
