Senior JJ Neece, who is attend- ing Western Oregon University Boys Cross Country: Brayden Linton, Cayden Gray, Chad Hughes, Dylan Jensen, Jacob Blankenship, Jaxson Jensen, Kyle Hughes, Ryan Jennings, Sam Ulrich, and Talon Ross. Girls Cross Country: Brea Blan- kenship, Corduroy Holbrook, The Sailors scored a total of 19 points which placed them 12th out of 34 teams in the 1A divi- sion for all of Oregon. Hans Petersen Memorial Field By Zeahna Young Siuslaw News “We were determined to host the state meet at Siuslaw because we knew we could do it right. We have a fantastic facility — and props to our community for that,” said Athletic Director and coach Chris Johnson of the 4A State Track and Field Champi- onships this past weekend (May 21-22). Several athletes placed was fully decked out with Amer- ican flags around the entire sta- dium thanks to Shannon Sheets and the Kiwanis Club, and the event started on Saturday with a special flyover courtesy of one of Florence’s own retired colonels. “We could do some things that they can’t do at Hayward Field,” explained Johnson, “and there will never be a flyover at a state meet again; there will never be a victory lap at the state meet again. There will never be kids getting championship T-shirts and huge bouquets of beautiful flowers ever again. “So, that was what we wanted to do, because the kids who were here two years ago lost a whole year of their career, and this was a shortened season. We were de- termined to make this the best state meet that we could host.” See STATE 2B Vik wrestlers shows strong in first meet, sweep Marshfield duals By Zeahna Young Siuslaw News Siuslaw’s wrestling team par- ticipated in its first two meets over the weekend. The first, which was held on Friday (May 21) at Sutherlin, began as a rare outdoor round-robin invitation- al tournament. However, about two hours into the evening meet, the air became too damp for the mats to stay dry, so all partici- pants came together to transport everything inside to finish the meet. Fortunately, ordinances had just changed, allowing the ZEAHNA YOUNG/SIUSLAW NEWS quantity of people at the event to be inside. “When the mats got slick, they were very quick about moving things into the gym,” said Siu- slaw coach Neil Wartnik. “I just thank God that the governor’s mandate allowed the wrestlers to wrestle without masks. As I was entering the day, just look- ing at it, I thought, ‘Wow, what a blessing that we have this op- portunity!” While no team scores were kept, the meet allowed the Sophomore Mason Buss, undefeated thus far, prepares to pin his competitor from Oakland.
