Grove 4 pm Tide Tables Siuslaw bats well in second game By Zeahna Young Siuslaw News Siuslaw: 7 Elmira: 13 Siuslaw: 4 Elmira: 11 “The Siuslaw Vikings’ offense showed much improvement since the loss against Cottage Grove on Tuesday (April 13),” coach Sean O’Mara said of his softball team’s performance at last Friday’s doubleheader at home versus Elmira. The Falcons were able to defeat the Viks in both games, with the final scores coming to 7-13 and 4-11. However, offen- sively the team is already show- ing great strides in improving its hitting percentage, with a combined total of 16 hits and 11 runs for the evening. Particularly notable for the evening was senior Adri Edwards, who went 4-for-8 at the plate, with 1 RBI and 4 sto- len bases. Elmira started out strong, scoring 6 runs in the first inning to Siuslaw’s 3. But the Vikings came back in the second inning with 3 more runs, tying the game and not allowing the Falcons to score again until the fifth inning. In that inning, the Falcons pulled ahead, scoring 3 more runs to Siuslaw’s 1. The Viks were unable to score any more runs in the first game, while Elmira scored 4 additional runs in the final two innings — bringing the final score in favor of Elmira, 7-13. In scoring, Siuslaw junior Bailey Overton had a double that led to a run, fellow junior Hayden Muller also had a standout performance in the first game, hitting 2-for-4 and scoring 2 runs, knocking in a pair of RBIs and stealing 1 base. Junior Maggie Manning pitched the entire game to Edwards, racking up three strikeouts. Said O’Mara, “Overall, I was quite pleased with the offensive turnaround the team was able to make as a result of the last two days of focused practice. We made some pretty signifi- cant gains from last Tuesday to Friday.” Going into the second game, O’Mara switched up pitchers, bringing in freshman Cate Waggoner, who picked up two strikeouts in the game. O’Mara also discussed the movement towards playing a short game in the second match-up, as third base wasn’t being covered as thoroughly as other areas of the field. It was a hard- fought game, but the Falcons were able to come out ahead, finishing the game after the sixth inning and winning 22-7. Lead-off on the mound for Siuslaw was Elijah Blanken- ship, who had pitched in the previous game against Cottage Grove, with Jason Garcia once again behind the plate. Ac- cording to coach Tom Shinn, “We are still looking at differ- ent combinations on the field. I had planned on looking at him [Blankenship] behind the plate in this series previously.” The Falcons took the lead early, finishing the first inning ahead 6-3. However, in the second inning, the Viks were able to tie things up by scoring an additional three runs and holding the Falcons scoreless in the inning. Siuslaw also executed well on defense in the second in- ning. In the third inning, the Fal- cons pulled ahead by one run and, in the fourth inning, Blankenship was relieved by Isaac Garza after four total strikeouts. Elmira scored three more runs in the fourth inning to Siuslaw’s one, putting the Fal- cons up 10-7. Unfortunately, the Viks did not bring home any more run- ners for the remainder of the game. In the fifth, Elmira kept swinging hard, scoring three See VIKS 3B It is time again to “chip in for the cause” during the 11th Annual Siuslaw Open to benefit Siuslaw Out- reach Services (SOS). The Siuslaw Open — presented by Oregon Pa- cific Bank, Florence Den- tal Clinic, PeaceHealth, Banner Bank and Mehlum Family Foundation — is one of the premier golfing events in Florence. This year's tournament will be held Saturday, May 22, at Florence Golf Links, which features open, Scot- tish-style fairways. “General Manager Nik Remer and his staff have made the planning an en- joyable process the past couple of years and we are excited to be back at FGL.” said SOS Executive Direc- tor Bob Teter, who added that that the tournament committee and FGL staff are taking every reasonable precaution to protect golf- ers adapted to state Covid mandates. Golfers will be provided with hand See GOLF 2B ODFW REGIONAL FISHING REPORT www.dfw.state.or.us/RR MID-COAST LAKES: Mid-coast lakes are full of trout and the fishing has been good. Many of the lakes have been stocked twice now and several oth- ers received stockings in mid-March. Here is a list of the lakes that have been stocked so far this year: Thissel Pond, Cleawox, Munsel, Mercer, Alder, Dune, Buck, Lost, Carter, Devils, Woahink, Elbow, Siltcoos, Eckman, and Big Creek Reservoirs #1 and #2. All of these lakes are sched- uled to receive more trout stockings in April as well. SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing continues to be slow on the Siuslaw and is slowing down for the season which closed March 31. Trout fishing in streams opens on May 22. Hatchery fish are also planted in Lake Creek and are released into Green Creek. These returning hatchery fish will start to show up in December and peak in January and February. Lake Creek closed to all fishing on March 31 and will open on May 22 for trout fishing. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing continues to be slow on the Alsea. The recent rain improved the conditions and the fishing picked up a bit. Overall, it continues to be slow and the run is winding down for the year as we head into April. Although it has been a slow year there are still fish to be caught in the system See FISHING 3B Hello Florence!! In the past week starting on Monday there were 38 active residential listings. 2 in Coast Village, 7 in Greentrees, and 1 in Florentine. That leaves 28 active listings in town, beach, north and south of which 8 are over a million. As for lots, there are 52 active residential lots with 4 over $600.000.
