When you don't have a lot of experience, it's that fear you’ve got to overcome; you’ve got to figure out how to how to play the game.” Greene made mention of several of his players who have had major growth this season. Despite a heavy push in the fourth quarter, Siuslaw was unable to catch up to the Tigers, losing 34-48. Siuslaw came out strong in the opening series, with Elijah Blankenship scoring a touch- down off of a five-yard run less than a minute and a half into the first quarter but came up short on the extra point. The Tigers responded and, in as much time, scored a touch- down themselves. The girls finished with a com- bined score of 19 points, defeating second-place Marist with 36 points. The Lady Spartans was the only other school with a girls team to qualify. In the boys race, the Viks fin- ished with a near-perfect score of 16 points — well ahead of the rest of the league, including Marist (61), Marshfield (82), Junction City (97), Cottage Grove (146) and Elmira (148). Siuslaw Athletic Director and cross country coach Chris Johnson acknowledged that his teams were fortunate compared to other schools who were not as prepared for the season due to various issues brought on by COVID-19. “It's sort of a mixed bag,” said Sailors sink Pirates, head into final game • SHS Track JV Inv. at SHS 3:30 pm High Tide By Zeahna Young Siuslaw News Siuslaw’s soccer team trav- eled to Elmira High School March 30 for a close match to end the season. In the first half, Elmira was the first to score, and the Vikings answered with a goal by Jason Garcia off of a free kick just outside the penal- ty box. After that, Elmira scored off NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS of a corner kick. Coach Londi Tomoaro noted, “It was a bit nerve-wracking to watch, but ultimately ended up in the goal.” The Vikings remained tied with the Falcons for a good portion of the second half. But towards the end, Elmira got a bit of a breakaway and scored with less than 10 minutes in the match. Siuslaw had some scor- ing attempts, but unfortunately wasn’t able to connect for another goal. “What it came down to, I think, is that Elmira wanted the win more than we did,” Tomaro said. “They [Elmira] played with that extra level of intensity that we were missing.” Overall, the Vikings played hard, taking five shots in the first half. I had prime rib with friends and it was delicious! I did a head count yesterday and had some interesting amounts of properties for sale.
