And, as in the girls race,
Siuslaw was able to pull out
the win overall with its top
five finishers placing
among the top nine spots.
Coming in second and
third, respectively, were
sophomore Samuel Ulrich
and junior Chad Hughes,
with times of 17:01.69 and
17:09.95.
Next across the finish
line for the Vikings were
senior Jaxson Jenson in
sixth place (17:32.49), and
sophomore Kyle Hughes

enth place.
Senior Ryan Jennings

with 27 points.
Philomath was second
overall with 40 points, and
Tillamook scored 64 for
third place in team scoring.

best earn enough to sustain
them for the rest of their
lives.
My dream was to be an
NFL player. In 1966, I was
smart enough to know
without attending a Divi-
sion 1 school my chances
of NFL stardom were un-
likely. I also knew Warren-
ton High School was no
hotbed of D1 athletes. My
college was also low on the
radar for NFL scouts. But I
earned an educational de-
gree and was able to teach
and coach for 34 years.
Education counts more
than any sports headline
you attain in high school.
To my knowledge, there
has only been one athlete
from Warrenton to play
in the NFL. He lasted two
years as a special team
player for the Los Angeles
Rams in the early 2000s.
Millions of athletes have
missed a full year due to
Covid. Less than .08 per-
cent of them will make it to
the professional level.
Let’s use Siuslaw and
Mapleton high schools
for an education and play
sports for fun. It’s great to
have a dream that push-
es and motivates you to
reach higher. Just remem-
ber that you need to have
a solid foundation in order
to keep your balance while
reaching.
