SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2020 | 5A Windermere Real Estate to ‘Share the Warmth’ Just in time for win- ter, real estate brokers throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington are gearing up for Winder- mere Real Estate’s annual “Share the Warmth” cam- paign. Form now through Dec. 21, Windermere bro- kers are hosting a virtual fundraiser to help local charities purchase winter necessities for community members in need. In the Florence area, the donations will benefit Siu- slaw Outreach Services. Share the Warmth is an annual tradition that has benefited local neighbor- hoods through donations of coats, blankets and oth- er items for nearly two de- cades. Though the COVID-19 pandemic and recent wild- fires have restricted physi- cal collection of donations, this new virtual adaptation is needed now more than ever. To make a donation to Siuslaw Outreach Ser- vices, visit the Share the Warmth website at help- sharethewarmth.com to view the list of all partici- pating Windermere offices and their local beneficia- ries. “Vulnerable people in our communities continue to be severely impacted by the pandemic and recent wildfires. Helping to en- sure our neighbors have the necessities they need to stay warm this winter is just one way we can step up and help,” said Scott Mitchels on, president of Windermere Services Company in Oregon and SW Washington. “Though the campaign looks differ- ent this year, we know that our communities will con- tinue to come together to take care of each other in times of crisis.” We are open and ready to assist you! Florence PD warns of recent email, phone scam Multiple Florence resi- dents have reported being contacted by individuals via telephone or email advising them they have been defrauded, and they need to repay the finan- cial institution. These payments are facilitated by the victim buying prepaid credit or gift cards and providing redemption information to the suspect(s) over the phone or via email. Simi- lar incidents have been re- ported in the past in Lane County. Citizens are reminded that this is not legitimate activity and financial in- stitutions do not utilize this method to collect of- ficial payments. Citizens are encouraged to hang up the phone if they suspect a scam, and report scams to your local law enforcement agency. Calls asking for pay- ment through untraceable methods such as prepaid cards, gift cards, or other cash cards, are probably a scam. Calls that use scare tac- tics, timelines, or pressure you to send money quick- ly, are also likely scams. There have also been two other recent reports of scams: • One where the sus- pect(s) will offer to “fix” an issue if you give them remote access to your computer, then obtain fi- nancial information via that means. Be extremely cautious in giving any- one remote access to your computer. • The other is a call from someone (often times a computerized message) advising that they are from Social Se- curity or the I.R.S. and there has been “fraud” in- volving your account, and if you do not “cooperate” in providing payment or additional financial insti- tution information they will issue a warrant. Residents are encour- aged to call the Florence Police Department at 541- 997-3515 if they have any questions.
