SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2020 | 3A Community News Voters reminded to sign, review both sides of ballot Ballots have been arriving in the mail of registered Lane County voters. Before turning in a ballot, voters should remember to review both sides of the ballot. “Lane County Elections wants to remind registered voters to re- view both sides of their official ballot. All ballots have additional voting opportunities on the back of their ballot,” said Lane County Clerk Cheryl Betschart. “Once a ballot has been returned it cannot be amended or recast.” Registered voters anywhere in Oregon who have changed their address still have time to update their registration and qualify for a full ballot. Those with election-re- lated questions should contact Lane County Elections at 541-682- 4234. Voters can drop off their bal- lots at one of many official drop box locations listed in the insert included with their ballot. In Flor- ence, that is at the Florence Justice Center, 900 Greenwood St. Drop boxes are now open and will re- main open until 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3. A map of drop box lo- cations is also available online. Also, voters must remember to sign their ballot return envelopes Buying or Selling? I can help. before mailing or returning their completed ballot back to Lane County Elections. The signature is a security mea- sure used to verify identity. Coun- ty personnel who have received training in handwriting analysis compare it to signatures in the vot- er registration record. A ballot may only be counted if the signatures match. “If your signature does not match or the return envelope is unsigned, someone from Lane County Elections will notify you and you will have until 14 days af- ter the election to address the issue or the ballot will not be processed,” said Betschart. “One of the most common reasons a signature does not match is an injury or medical condition that has affected a per- son’s motor skills.” In order to be counted, ballots must be received at Lane County Elections by: • Mail — Postmarks do not qualify ballots. Voters must mail their ballots with enough time for processing and delivery by the post office. • Official Drop Boxes — There are 20 official drop boxes located throughout Lane County that will be available to voters until 8 p.m. on Election Day. “It is incredibly important for voters to be aware of the Election Day deadline,” said Betschart. “If a voter doesn’t mail their ballot ear- ly enough to ensure the Elections Office receives it before the dead- line or fails to get it to an official drop box before 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, their vote cannot be counted.” For more information, visit lanecountyor.gov. Voters with is- sues that cannot be resolved via phone or email will be able to make an appointment to visit the Elections Office. The declaration is the legal underpinning for the Governor’s COVID-19 executive orders and the Oregon Health Authority’s health and safety guidance. She issued the following statement: “As early as January of this year, the Oregon Health Authority began its COVID-19 prepared- ness efforts as cases spread overseas. Since then, more than 600 Oregonians and over 200,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 — and last week, we set a daily record with 550 new cases. “Extending the COVID -19 state of emergency is not something I do light- ly, but we know all too well that not taking action would mean an even great- WEDNESDAY THURSDAY er loss of life. The second wave of COVID-19 has ar- rived in the United States, and this time it is hitting all of our communities. “My goal is to keep Ore- gon on track to open more schools for in-person in- struction for our students — and to continue to re- open, and keep open, our businesses, communities, and economies. Oregon is not an island. Without safety precautions in place, we could quickly see our case counts spike as well. “We must continue to work together and follow the simple steps that have kept us safe throughout this pandemic: washing our hands, wearing face coverings, watching our physical distance, stay- ing home when sick, and avoiding social get-togeth- ers, especially indoors.” The state of emergen- cy declaration is the legal underpinning for the ex- ecutive orders the Gov- ernor has issued to keep Oregonians healthy and safe throughout this cri- sis, including her orders on reopening Oregon while maintaining essen- tial health and safety pro- tections, as well as orders around childcare, schools, and higher education op- erations. Extending the state of emergency decla- ration allows those orders to stay in effect. The governor reviews and reevaluates each of her emergency orders every 60 days, to determine wheth- er those orders should be continued, modified or re- scinded. The findings of this re- view process are listed in the executive order.
