People can pick up an ap- plication at Backstreet Gal- lery, 1421 Bay St. in Historic Old Town Florence, open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The applications are due by Oct. 15, with the artwork re- ceived between 9 and 11 a.m. on Nov. 8. The community challenge will also be juried. This week, Backstreet Gal- lery announced the selec- tion of artists Rosie Hill, Joni Goodman-Fox and Charles Edmunds as jurors in the community challenge. SIUSLAW RIVER: Cutthroat trout, fall Chinook Fall Chinook fishing on the Siuslaw is still slow but starting to improve and fish are being caught every day. Most of the fish are being caught low in the tidewater areas downstream of Cushman. Anglers are reminded that due to low forecasted returns for the 2020 season bag limits have been reduced. The bag limit for the Siuslaw River is 1 wild Chinook per day and 1 per year for the 2020 season. The event was hosted by SOLVE and the Surfrider Foundation. Community pitches in for beach clean-up Sustaining Oregon’s Legacy by Volunteering, (SOLVE) was formed in 1969 by Republican Governor Tom McCall to reduce and cleanup litter and discourage vandalism across the state. The first state-wide vol- unteer Beach Cleanup in the nation was organized by SOLVE in 1984. The success of that and subsequent clean-ups by Oregon volunteers spread as a means of environmen- tal activism since then to all 50 states, and to 100 other countries around the world. The group was originally called Stop Oregon Littering and Vandalism but changed the name after expanding the scope of its efforts to include educa- tion, outreach and sustain- ability initiatives. As a mixed-media artist, work- ing in collage, art journaling See ART 2B VFW Auxiliary kicks off patriotic art contest Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary #3232 in Florence has announced the kick-off of the VFW’s annual Young American Creative Patriotic Art Con- test. Local students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to compete for $31,500 in national scholarships. Students must submit an original 2- or 3-dimension- al piece of artwork. Digital art, photography and jewelry are not accept- ed. The entry must be com- pleted during the current 2020-21 schoolyear, and the application must in- clude a teacher or supervis- ing adult’s signature. Students begin by com- peting at the local VFW Auxiliary level. The first-place winner from each post advances to district competition, with district winners advancing to the state competition. State first-place winners compete for their share of $31,500 in national awards. The national first-place winner will be awarded a $15,000 scholarship. In addition, national first- through 10th-place winners are featured in VFW Auxiliary Magazine and at vfwauxiliary.org. All state winning entries will be held and displayed and judged at the VFW Auxil- iary National Convention that will take place July 31 to Aug. 5, 2021, in Balti- more, Md. VFW Auxiliary started the Young American Cre- ative Patriotic Art Contest in 1979 to recognize up- and-coming artists and encourage patriotism in youth. Approximately 4,000 stu- dents participate each year. In addition to $31,500 in national scholarships, lo- cal and state VFW auxilia- ries throughout the nation award more than $150,000 in Patriotic Art scholar- ships every year. Student entries must be submitted to VFW Auxilia- ry #3232 by March 31, 2021.
