SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2020 | 5A Workshop to assist newly widowed on Aug. 7 “There’s so much to do when a beloved passes away, and the feelings are so in- tense it seems almost im- possible to face them all...” this is what many people have expressed, and this is what the Care Committee of Florence Unitarian Uni- versalist Fellowship will be addressing in a workshop on Friday, Aug. 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The workshop will pro- vide information on the grieving process and local resources available, and is designed to help people get the support they need. The committee has also prepared a guidebook to help people through the process, “Completing A Life Well Lived,” which will be given to participants. There are few seats avail- able. A donation of $20 is suggested. “We’re limiting participa- tion to maintain the current restrictions to a maximum of 10 people,” says Kather- ine Hemmens, chair of the committee. COM S IUSLAW N EWS Candidates from page 1A work sessions and other external meetings where the councilor/mayor will represent the city and its in- terests,” wrote City Record- er Kelli Weese in a press release about the upcoming election. The mayor is the presid- ing officer of the council and officiates council meetings, while also working direct- ly with the city manager to determine the order of busi- ness of city council meeting agendas. The mayor also serves as the figurehead for the City of Florence. There are two ways to apply for the Florence po- sitions, the first being by signatures. In this method, candidates submit a pre- liminary petition and then work to gather signatures of residents of the city who are PLANNING from page 1A The presentation was given by Florence Planning Director Wendy Farley Campbell, who went over the staff-recommended modifications to the Flor- ence City Code. According to the staff re- port, “The proposed code includes increases in the numerical allowance for building height to match those in the residential dis- tricts and the addition of registered to vote. Candidates are required to gather 25 signatures to qualify; however, the city recommends that more sig- natures be gathered in case signatures are rejected. This often occurs when signa- tories incorrectly assume those providing signatures live within city limits, or are unaware they are not regis- tered to vote. Of the current petitions on file with the City of Flor- ence, only incumbent May- or Joe Henry and councilor candidates Sally Wantz and Maggie Bagon have com- pleted their petitions. Can- didates Jo Beaudreau and Bill Meyer are still collect- ing signatures and Daniel Lofy is awaiting verification of the signatures he has re- ceived. Lane County’s deadline for submissions is Tuesday, Aug. 25. According to Weese, the city recommends filing by Friday, Aug. 14, so signa- tures may be verified in time for the deadline. While Lane County does allow a separate, fee-based application process that for- goes signatures, the City of Florence charter prohibits that route, relying solely on the signature process. For further details on applying, visit www.ci.flor- ence.or.us/council/elec- tion-city-councilors-mayor or contact Weese at kelli. weese@ci.florence.or.us. Dunes City also has four positions up for election in November, including the mayor and three council positions. Currently, only two applications have been filed for the positions. The Dunes City Coun- cil is comprised of a sev- en-person non-compen- sated board consisting of a mayor and six councilors. The mayor is elected for a two-year term and council- ors are elected on a rotating basis for four-year terms. Interested candidates may pick up a packet at Dunes City Hall, 82877 Spruce St. in Westlake, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Candidates are asked to call ahead before arriving. For additional informa- tion, contact City Elections Officer Jamie Mills at 541- 997-3338 or visit dunescit- yhall.com. In the districts where single family dwellings are permitted conditional- ly, duplexes and duets are proposed to be added to close the gap on residential building types permitted in those districts.” FarleyCampbell reviewed the process that led to the department’s suggested changes, stating the “pro- posed changes make more land available for housing.” Commissioners had few questions as this was the final step in the process to modify code and discussed had been held previously. After FarleyCampbell’s review, the resolution was passed unanimously. During the meeting, technical difficulties at Florence City Hall made communication between commissioners and city staff difficult, but the pas- sage of the changes to city code, and the rescheduling of the public hearing, were accomplished in spite of the issues. Following a brief re- minder from FarleyCamp- bell of the subjects to be covered the next time the group met, the meeting was adjourned. The next Planning Com- mission meeting is sched- uled for Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit ci.florence.or.us.
