Chip sealing oper- ations will begin this Monday, July 13 (weath- er permitting) and will continue through Thursday, July 16. Chip Sealing is a com- mon pavement mainte- nance practice that ex- tends pavement life and provides a good driving surface. With chip seals, a thin film of heated as- phalt liquid is sprayed on the road surface, followed by the place- ment of small aggregates (“chips”). The chips are com- pacted to orient them for maximum adher- ence to the asphalt, and excess stone is swept from the surface. A fog seal is then ap- plied to further bind the chips to the asphalt liq- uid, protect the chip seal from UV rays and finish the road preservation. The City has com- pleted five other chip seal projects in recent years. Previous projects included Oak Street be- tween 20th and 35th streets; Rhododendron Drive between 35th and Sebastian streets; 35th Street between Pine and Siano Loop; Oak Street between 35th and 46th streets; Spruce Street between 25th and 35th streets; and 42nd Street from Hwy 101 to Spruce Street. In addition, Micro- Coat will be applied to bike lanes along King- wood Street within the project area. MicroCoat is a micro seal coating system that will protect the bike lanes from deg- radation. MicroCoat was cus- tom designed at a state- of-the-art laboratory in Portland Ore., spe- cifically for the Pacific Northwest. It will pro- vide a smoother surface for the bicyclists and pe- destrians. COVID-19 STATS State and County COVID counts (As of July 10, 2020) Lane County Public Health (LCPH) — Lane County Public Health (LCPH) was notified of 13 additional positive cases of COVID-19 and two new Long Term Care worker cases. This makes a total of 284 positive tests. (Note: The total includes confirmed and presumptive.) • Hospitalized: 2 • Deaths: 3 • Infectious: 75 • Sick at home: 180 • Recovered: 60 • 27,961 (total individuals tested) As with any street con- struction project, there will be slight delays during the chip and fog seal application along with the MicroCoat ap- plication. Residents and busi- nesses are advised to use alternate routes to avoid the work area between July 13–16. For those who need to travel in those corridors, slow down and be pa- tient and attentive to the traffic control flaggers.
