The purpose of this sur- vey is to identify and pre- vent potential cross con- nection contamination from entering the potable (drinking) water distribu- tion system. This survey is required by the Oregon Health Au- thority, Drinking Water Services. The Oregon Health Au- thority (OHA) requires that all water systems in the State of Oregon to have an effective Cross Connection Control Program. Cross connections within the public water supply are a serious concern as they can allow contaminants or pollutants to enter the pub- lic water system through what is called “backflow.” PATTISON—Lila Pat- tison of Deadwood, Ore., graduated from Cedarville University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing de- gree in Nursing during the 124th annual commence- ment held May 2, 2020. National Drinking Water Week continues through May 9 Throughout the corona- virus pandemic, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Con- trol and Prevention (CDC) has assured consumers that drinking water is safe to use as normal. The consistent and re- liable quality of drink- ing water is at the heart of theme for this year’s Drinking Water Week, “There When You Need It” which began May 3 and continues through this Sat- urday, May 9. The City of Florence Public Works Depart- ment and the American Water Works Association (AWWA) will observe Drinking Water Week by recognizing the vital role tap water plays in the daily life, the infrastructure that is required to carry it to and from homes and busi- nesses, and the important work of water profession- als “behind the scenes.” The City of Florence has dependable and reliable access to safe drinking. In large part, this stems from the regular testing that wa- ter systems are subject to which ensures that regular standards for water quality are met. Every water system must publish a Consumer Con- fidence Report (CCR), by July 1 of each year, which details its water quality. “Shortly after the World Health Organization de- clared the coronavirus a pandemic, the EPA and CDC each reminded us that we should trust our tap water as we normally would for hygiene and hy- dration,” said AWWA CEO David LaFrance. “This proved to be extremely important because hand- washing is an important way to stop the spread of the virus. We couldn’t do that without high-quality drinking water.” According to Mike Mill- er, Florence Public Works Director, drinking water week is a good reminder of the critical role water plays in our daily life. “We can’t live with- out clean, safe water, yet so many take it and the treatment and delivery needed to get it to our taps for granted,” said Mill- er. “That’s why our team works so hard every day to delivery high quality wa- ter that is safe, reliable and cost effective. Water is one of earth’s most precious resources and the City is committed in providing the highest level of ser-vice and quality of service to our customers.” To commemorate the week, The City of Florence along with other stake- holders in the water in- dustry throughout North America and beyond will encourage consumers to understand and appreciate their drinking water. This can allow contaminated or polluted water to flow back into your drinking water. Given OHA and U.S. EPA regulations, and the dan- gers that exist from unpro- tected cross connections, it is necessary to establish and maintain an effective cross connection control pro- gram to protect both our water customer as well as the integrity of the City of Florence’s water supply. One necessary compo- nent in this program is a survey of the water system to determine where cross connections exist. Water customers can complete the survey on-line at www.ci.florence.or.us/ publicworks/cross-connec- tion-survey or contact the Public Works Department at 541-997-4106 for a paper survey and additional in- formation.
