Both athletes placed well at the regional meet, including first place for Kaylee Stinger (above) for the All Around title in the Xcel Gold division. Meanwhile, Jane Wilks (inset) placed sixth in the Excel Platinum All Around division. B Y J ARED A NDERSON Siuslaw News “T he smiles and jubi- lation on the kids’ faces is pretty spe- cial,” Siuslaw boys basketball coach Dylan Perry said. “It makes coaching very reward- ing when you see that kind of excitement and satisfaction on the kids face after you’ve seen how much blood, sweat and tears they put into practice.” It was moments like that, in & SHEET METAL, INC. “Your Local Independent Trane Dealer” Florence’s Oldest & Largest Heating Contractor the locker rooms after a hard- fought game throughout the season, that made the 2019/20 basketball season special for Perry. He reflected on the sea- son after the team had its final game last week against Woodburn, which they even- tually lost, 39-60. Pre-game, Perry kept the talk focused on the little things — taking care of the ball, not turning it over, playing solid defense. “Just try to keep it as simple as possible. I didn’t want to put too much on their plate and get stressed out. This wasn’t bigger than just playing a bas- ketball game.” Woodburn’s energy was high from the start, the lights out as they ran out with music playing. “Everyone was hootin’ and hollerin’. It was a great atmo- sphere. We came out and matched their intensity.” See VIKS 2B Much has been written about Sabrina Ionesco, the talented point guard of the University of Oregon’s wom- en’ basketball team, and her last-season decision to return to school for a chance to win a national title. Th is is the mo- tivating factor for her and her team. Many individuals and teams also aspire to win national ti- tles. How do coaches motivate teams or individuals when no such chance for the title ex- ists? How do players, parents, coaches and even spectators maintain their enthusiasm for the games when their goal be- comes unachievable? Th at is the “$64 Question.” Coaches are forever trying to motivate their teams in the hope to add a level of intensity for the game. Teams are made up of in- dividuals with diff erent mo- tivating factors in their own heads. One tried — but not always successful method — is to dedicate a game in the name of someone known and close to the team. Th is has been por- trayed on many sports movies. “Brian’s Song,” the original, has Gale Sayers, Hall of Fame Halfb ack of the Chicago Bears, dedicating a game for team- mate Brian Piccolo, has lung cancer. When they visit the hospital to present the game ball to Brian, in typical Hol- lywood fashion, Brian from his hospital bed looks at Gale and says, “When you dedicate a game to someone aren’t you supposed to win?” In 1975, I ran full steam into a wall before our game against Monument. Th e purpose was to demonstrate how hard I ex- pected them to hit in the game. All but two players were play- ing in their fi rst football game and they seemed unsure as to the protective quality of their pads. I broke my glasses and cut my forehead but the mes- sage was made and we hit hard that game and for the season. In 1978, I took my winless Siuslaw JV girls’ basketball team to my classroom before the return game against Myr- tle Point. We lost the fi rst game by 47 points and I knew we needed a better eff ort at home. I played a pre-game motiva- tional tape from the coach of the Baylor Bears football team. Th e key message was about self-motivation. Our girls then went out to play in front of the largest JV crowd of the year. We lost by eight points but also fouled more than 50 times. It was good that I had 16 players and the Myrtle Point players were poor free-throw shooters. Personally, I used music to get pumped up for football at Pacifi c University. I played the same two songs before every home game.
