Ironically, the Vikings had to bowl against Oregon City once again, coming away with a second win, 300-277, to move on to the next round. The Vikings’ next match was against Silverton, with Siuslaw coming out on top, 277-240. Next, the Vikings had a Fishing from 1B steelhead fishing on Dec. 1. Fishing has been fair so far on Lake Creek and there are fish out there to be caught through the month of February. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has slowed down on the Alsea River as of late. The popular bank fishery on the NF Alsea is still pro- ducing fish but it has slowed down considerably over the last week. The mainstem Alsea is back in shape and the fishing has been fair for the drift boaters on those sections. The later return- ing wild broodstock fish re-match with Marshfield, providing the Lady Viks with a chance to move into the third-place match with a win over the Lady Pirates. This time, Siuslaw was able to narrowly sink Marshfield, 320-310, earn- ing them a spot in the match for third place against Mazama (Klamath Falls). Siuslaw fell behind early, losing the first game 345- 329. However, in the finals match, Cottage Grove defeated Mazama (371- 346), taking the state title and leaving Siuslaw in third place — meaning that three of the top four teams at state came from District 4 teams: Cottage Grove 1st place, Siuslaw 3rd and Marshfield 4th. “What a great tourna- ment for our district,” said Siuslaw coach Dusty Anderson. In addition, the North Bend boys team finished 2nd overall. Siuslaw was led by Elissa Hurley and Faith Coday, both of whom were named to the State All- Tournament Team. Coday finished third overall and Hurley was voted first place on the All- Tournament Team and was named the state tourna- ment MVP. “Congratulations to Elissa and Faith on their great accomplishment during the tournament,” Anderson said. are beginning to show up and they will continue to provide opportunity through March. The Alsea River receives two differ- ent stocks of hatchery steelhead, one “tradition- al” stock that is an early returner and peaks in December/January and a later returning wild broodstock that peaks January-March. These two stocks combine to provide winter steelhead fishing opportunities from late November through March. Trout fishing in streams will reopen on May 22, 2020. SALMON RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing is open on the Salmon River. The majority of the winter steelhead on the Salmon River are wild and the run usually peaks around mid-December through February. SILETZ RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing picked up on the Siletz River as the river dropped back into shape over the weekend and into this week. There has been a good mix of hatchery and wild fish being caught. The best fishing will be on the upper portions of the river and into the gorge due to the high water. Anglers are reminded to keep wild fish in the water and release immediately after landing to minimize negative impacts to these fish. Both boat and bank anglers will have good opportunities when the river drops back into shape next week. Winter steelhead typically start to show up in December and peak through March. The 4-mile bridge (aka Steel Bridge) in the Siletz gorge is open to motorized vehi- cles but is only open to public vehicles on the weekend.
