Organizers want to thank the Florence community for their do- nation of gifts; Homegrown Public House for the great Keg for a Cause fundraiser; Craig’s for great ginger- bread cookies; Safeway for the fruit, Umpqua Dairy for the milk; and The Silver Lining Boutique, Pam Carri- er, and Holmes and Linton DDS for their donations. In addition, Arc of Lane County donated dinner. Families Connected would also like to thank Santa Steve and San- ta Danny for giving their time to bring a little fun and joy to the party. Thank you, volunteers, for the countless hours in preparing, serving dinner, and helping with the Christmas Crafts. We couldn’t have done any of this without the Florence Elks Lodge #1858 for al- lowing Families Connected to use their facility and for the donations of goody bags and stuffed animals that brought many smiles. Thank you to everyone who par- ticipated, attended and made this happen for Families Connected in Florence. 1749 Highway 101 • 541-997-1200 Celebrating a milestone birthday APARTMENT FOR RENT Alcove: 400 square feet. On Tuesday, the same group gathered again at McDonald’s to celebrate his 95th birthday. Don has been somewhat of a legend in and around the Florence area. He is a native Oregonian and has lived in the Florence area for many years. Don is a part of Oregon history, from Lake Oswego to Shore Acres and in be- tween. He served the U.S. as a Marine during World War II and survived Guadalcanal and other strategic opera- tions. He is a survivor! Around town, Don is well known as the man with the feathers in his cap, which developed from his love of birds. In days gone by, Don would be seen riding his bicycle around town and even joining in the Rhody parades. Don has never met a stranger and people are drawn to him. Don took a fall about three years ago breaking a hip, so now resides in Regency care home. A loyal friend brings Don in his wheelchair to McDonald’s most Tuesdays and Fridays to meet with a group of longtime friends for lunch and coffee. I have been blessed to be a part of this circle of friendship for 20 plus years.
