People are asked to note that City Club meetings for 2019 have been moved to the first Tuesday of each month. A limited lunch is avail- able for purchase prior to the meeting. In addition to his du- ties as editor of the Siu- slaw News, Hickson is also managing editor of The Cottage Grove Sentinel. He is also the author of two books, “Humor at the Speed of Life” and “Pearls of Writing Wisdom: From 16 shucking years as a col- umnist.” He is currently working on his third book, an ed- itor’s diary titled “All the News That’s Print to Fit.” Prior to launching his career in journalism at the Siuslaw News, Hickson was a corporate chef fort 10 years in Dallas, Texas, and Atlanta, Ga., and Portland Ore. He has deep roots in the Florence community and, among other activities, has served as a volunteer fire- fighter with Siuslaw Val- ley Fire and Rescue from 2011 to 2016 before being elected to the SVFR Board of Directors in November 2016. Hickson said he believes in the importance of lo- cal newspapers providing information, chronicling history and encouraging dialogue that builds stron- ger communities. He will be speaking about his 21 years of expe- riences at our local news- paper, the changes and impacts on journalism due to social media, and the important role of small- town papers throughout America. Editor@TheSiuslawNews.com Applications now open for Lady of Elks scholarships The Florence Ladies of Elks B.P.O.E. #1858 is now offering applications for scholarships and vocation- al training to any graduat- ing senior from the local high schools of Siuslaw, Mapleton, Reedsport and Triangle Lake who plan to attend an accredited col- lege, university or trade/ vocational educational program. This year, there is a new application format for Siuslaw and Mapleton. Students are advised to contact their counselor to complete the application process. The new applications have been mailed out to Reedsport and Triangle Lake. Students are advised to contact their counselor to request the application packet. The deadline for all ap- plications is March 13, with awards to be an- nounced in April. Funds for the scholar- ships awarded by the La- dies of Elks are accumu- lated through fundraising projects held throughout the year. First Friday Film Forums to begin Jan. 3 at FUUF The Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (FUUF) is joining with HopeDance Films, a local nonprofit, to offer the First Friday Film Forum at the FUUF Fellowship Hall, 87738 Highway 101 (at the corner of Heceta Beach Rd.) Starting Friday, Jan 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., thought-provoking films will be screened every first Friday, with conversation encouraged afterward. January’s film will be “Planetary,” an exploration of the experience of seeing our beautiful Earth from afar. City announces ‘Call for Artists’ for Art Exposed The City of Florence is inviting artists to submit their work to the Public Art Committee’s (PAC) program, Art Exposed, a rotating outdoor art gal- lery. The artwork will be on display throughout Flor- ence’s Historic Old Town district for a two-year period starting in the spring of 2020. Art submitted must be available for sale to the public. Each art piece will be displayed for two years and each artist will be provided a stipend of $1,000 for installation of the art. The City of Flor- ence will be providing the bases for the art and may assist in installation. All artwork must be the original design and art- work of the entrant and suitable for viewing by all ages. The deadline for sub- missions is Friday, Jan. 24, 2020. Applications can be submitted through CaFE, an online database of national public art calls. Artists can register at www.callforentry.org. There is a $25 fee per art- ist to submit work.
