4C | L ETTERS TO S ANTA 2019 | SIUSLAW NEWS SIUSLAW NEWS A red-nosed reindeer and his lasting fame A dults and children alike are familiar with the tale of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” As the lyrics of the song illustrate: “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose / And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows.” Popularized by the song written by Johnny Marks and sung by Gene Au- try, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer dates back to 1939. A copywriter named Robert L. May created the story of the misfit reindeer in 1939 when working for Montgom- ery Ward. The retail giant was produc- ing marketing holiday coloring books for children and wanted to come up with a clever character. Although the name “Rudolph” is now beloved, May’s original ideas in- cluded Rollo and Reginald. Also, Rudolph’s famed red nose al- most didn’t come to be. Because a red nose at the time was viewed as a sign of alcoholism, Montgomery Ward was hesitant to be on board with the bulbous, red snoot. A blue nose was considered, but later changed. In its first year of publication, Mont- gomery Ward had distributed 2.4 million copies of Rudolph’s story. The catchy tune came thereaf- ter, followed by a cartoon short in 1948. In 1964, the stop-mo- tion animated television special further propelled Rudolph to celebrity and became the most recognizable Ru- dolph adaption. Today, Rudolph is known across the globe as the reindeer responsible for navigating Santa’s sleigh through tricky weather on Christmas Eve. He continues to be loved by many, young and old. He truly “will go down in history!” — Courtesy of Metro 148 Maple St., Florence, OR | 541-902-3521 TheSiuslawNews.com LES SCHWAB TIRE CENTER 4325 Highway 101 541-997-7178 FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH 1935 25th St., Florence OR 541-997-7660 P EGGY P EARSON , B ERKSHIRE H ATHAWAY 1875 Highway 101, Florence OR 541-997-6000 BOB GARCIA, ALL STATE INSURANCE LOFY CONSTRUCTION, LLC HECETA SELF STORAGE 2775 Highway 101, Florence OR 541-991-8900 2530 Kingwood Street, Suite D Florence, OR 541-590-3691 • CCB# 221760 87632 Highway 101, Florence OR 541-997-9702 C HRISTINA V OOGD , B ERKSHIRE H ATHAWAY M AUREEN H EWLETT , B ERKSHIRE H ATHAWAY OLD SCHOOL FURNITURE 1875 Highway 101, Florence OR 541-999-0239 1875 Highway 101, Florence OR 541-991-7794 1550 6th St., Florence, OR 541-997-9424 OREGON PACIFIC BANK RIVER CITIES TAXI SAW SHOP FLORENCE 1355 Highway 101, Florence 541-997-7121 541-997-8520 1550 6th St., Florence, OR 541-997-2653 SIUSLAW GLASS & MIRROR SIUSLAW PUBLIC LIBRARY SOCKS TO A T 1780 Kingwood St., Florence 541-997-8526 1460 9th St., Florence | 88148 Riverview Ave., Mapleton | 541-997-3132 • siuslawlibrary.info 1341 Bay St. Unit F 541-991-3220 SPRUCE POINT ASSISTED LIVING SWANSON’S PEST MANAGEMENT TRUE VALUE HARDWARE & Memory Care Community | 541-997-6111 375 9th St., Florence, OR www.swansonspm.com 800-622-8993 1750 Highway 126, Florence 541-997-8024
