Attendees to this free family event will have a chance to explore the crèche tradition in the folk art of many cultures. The Nativity Festival runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 6 through 8 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2705 Munsel Lake Road. Admission is free. Most of the Nativity sets are on loan from local members of the commu- nity. These are cherished pieces that have become part of their family tra- ditions. Many have been collecting for years and are eager to share their love of the Savior through their Nativity scenes. Children who stop by are invited to color their own book of the first Christmas story. There will also be coloring sheets available so that small children can par- ticipate. The Nativity Festival has grown from a one-day event displaying 119 nativi- ty scenes to a three-day fes- tival with almost 400 crèch- es, tapestries and other art forms depicting the birth of Christ. The Christmas crèche, also known as a Nativity or manger scene, is more than a decoration for many, who displaying a Christmas crèche is a way to focus on the meaning of the holiday. These can be made from many different materials and can vary from single piece displays to a whole entourage of shepherds, wise men, cattle and the Holy Family. Crèches come in all shapes and sizes, from tra- ditional figures handed down through gener-ations — the 3-legged dog, the camel with the chipped nose — to ethnic inter- pretations, from children’s paper cutouts to expensive collectibles The festival is open to people of all faiths and be- liefs and all are invited to attend and enjoy the musi- cal concerts that are being performed on Friday, Sat- urday and Sunday. A listing of daily music can be found at Florence Nativity Festival on Face- book. The Festival will cul- minate on Sunday with a Christmas Devotional, live from Salt Lake City, Utah.
