Book Review “Full Throttle” by Joe Hill In this masterful collec- tion of short fiction, Joe Hill dissects timeless hu- man struggles in relent- less tales of supernatural suspense, including “In The Tall Grass,” one of two stories co-written with Stephen King and the basis for a terrifying new feature film from Netflix. A little door opens to a world of fairy-tale won- ders that becomes the blood-drenched stomp- ing ground for a gang of hunters in “The Faun.” A grief-stricken librarian climbs behind the wheel of an antique bookmobile to deliver fresh reads to the dead in “Late Returns.” In “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain,” soon to be an episode on Shudder TV’s “Creepshow,” two young friends stumble on the corpse of a plesiosaur at the water’s edge, a dis- covery that forces them to confront the inescapable truth of their mortality … and other horrors that lurk in the water’s shivery depths. And tension shimmers in the sweltering heat of the Nevada desert as a faceless trucker finds him- self caught in a sinister dance with a tribe of mo- torcycle outlaws in “Throt- tle,” co-written with Ste- phen King. Replete with shocking thrillers, including two previously unpublished stories written expressly for this volume (“Mums” and “Late Returns”) and another appearing in print for the first time (“Dark Carousel”), “Full Throttle” is a darkly imagined odys- sey through the complexi- ties of the human psyche. Hypnotic and disquiet- ing, it mines our tormented secrets, hidden vulnerabil- ities, and basest fears, and demonstrates this excep- tional talent at his very best, revealing once again why Joe Hill is “a major player in 21st century fan- tastic fiction” (Washington Post Book World). Pop-Up Book Sale The Friends of the Siu- slaw Public Library is holding a Pop-Up Book Sale on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will take place at Siu- slaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St. in Florence. During the sale, hard back and trade paperbacks will be $2. Paperback books will be $1. Only cash and checks will be accepted. All pro- ceeds benefit the Siuslaw Public Library. Holiday Closure The library will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day. Regular hours resume on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Texas Gypsies Preview The Texas Gypsies will perform in a “preview” concert at the library on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. The group performs vintage jazzy swing with sounds of the roaring 1920s and the Great Gats- by era, along with Big Band swing, Western swing and more. The main concert will be that evening at the Flor- ence Events Center; check out www.eventcenter.org for more information and to purchase tickets for the evening concert.
