SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2019 | 3A United States Marines celebrate 244th birthday In honor of all local Ma- rines and Navy Corpsmen attached to a Marine unit, a 244th birthday dinner cel- ebration will be held at the local Elks Lodge, complete with the traditional birth- day cake and Comman- dant’s Message on Sunday, Nov. 10. A no-host cocktail hour will be held from 5-6 p.m. with a selection of dinner menu being served from 6-7 p.m. Thereafter, the Com- mandant’s message will be read, concluding with the traditional cake cutting cer- emony. All Marines and guests are invited to attend but are requested to inform this year’s host and hostess of their intent to attend, and which menu they prefer. City Club seeks way forward The Florence City Club meeting on Thursday, Nov. 7, features guest speaker Camp Florence Director Pete Roberts and one of his residents, Frankie. Florence City Club meets from noon to 1 p.m. at Ocean Dunes Golf Links. Meetings are open to the public and lunch is available for purchase. Camp Florence is a cor- rectional facility for young men. It has long been an es- tablished presence providing the area with willing workers who have participated in ev- erything from construction and landscaping to helping the Soroptimists fill Christ- mas baskets every year. Following the program, there will be a brief meeting of the membership to deter- mine a way forward if the City Club is to remain a vi- able organization. Community News YACHATS ARTS FESTIVAL PHOTOS BY MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS T he 22nd annual Harvest and Holidays Arts and Crafts Festival was held last Friday, Sat- urday and Sunday at the Yachats Commons. The festival featured hun- dreds of visitors streaming through the Yachats Com- mons, stopping at craft booths offering all types of handcrafted items, food products, jewelry and many other artisan crafts. Award winning art and photography were on dis- play and there were master craftsmen working in met- al, wood and ceramics on site to discuss their work. There was also a wide array of specialty items like soap, dog treats, wood crafts, fiber art and metal sculpture available and lo- cal honey and other baked goods were abundant. Florence author Judy Fleagle was featured at the event as she shared amus- ing anecdotes from her latest book, “The Oregon Coast Guide to the Unex- pected.” In addition, there were opportunities to speak with members of the Yachats Fire Department and the Yachats Ladies Club. Honor the service and sacrifice of all active-duty and military veterans at the 13th annual Veterans Day Parade on Monday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. in Historic Old Town Florence. This year’s parade Grand Marshals are veterans from World War II. The parade assembles near the Florence Events Center on Quince Street and continues to Bay Street before ending at the Veter- an’s Memorial Park, where the Florence-Siuslaw Lions Club will be serving free hot dogs.
