Learn about the four foIn 1890, Eugenia Washington, Mary Desha, Ellen Hardin Walworth and Mary S. Lockwood had the vision to establish an organization dedicated to “perpetuate the memory and spirit of the women and men who achieved American independence.” The organizers agreed that it “should be presided over by a lady prominent in the United States,” so that same day, First Lady of the United States, Caroline Scott Harrison, accepted the invitation to serve as the first President General. Thus was Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) born. At the Thursday, Oct. 24, meeting, the Oregon Dunes Chapter DAR will learn more about the four founders of the DAR in a program presented by Tami Sneddon, Albany’s Linn Chapter Regent. Officially incorporated in 1896 by an Act of Congress, the National Society DAR is a nonprof- it, non-political volunteer women’s service organiza- tion dedicated to promot- ing patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education for children. All are welcome to attend and learn more about DAR this Thursday at New Life Lutheran Church. For the time, contact Karen Childs at 541-997- 7154. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic back- ground, who can prove lin- eal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for DAR mem- bership. To learn more about the DAR, visit the local web- site at www.oregondunes chapter.org or the national website at www.dar.org. COM Lane County Waste Management has part- nered with local commu- nity collectors throughout the Florence area to collect certain plastics on an ongoing basis. There will be several special commu- nity collection events throughout the year as well as weekly collections estab- lished by the individual collectors. The Master Recyclers of Florence want to help edu- cate the community regarding the types of plas- tics that will be collected and how to clean and sort these plastics. It is very important to have clean products so they can be repurposed properly. Here are some tips on recycling the No. 2, 4 and 5 plastics that are part of the program. The only plastics that will be collected will be clean and dry — No. 2 (HDPE), No. 4 (LDPE) and No. 5 (PP) bottles, jugs, tubs and lids. check the numbers on the products to ensure you have the correct plastics. All containers and lids will need to be rinsed com- pletely clean and dried for storage. No. 2 bottles and No. 2 tubs need to be sorted sep- arately, as they are the only plastic that needs to be handled differently). How do you identify whether it is a bottle or tub? A bottle has a thread- ed neck and cap, and usu- ally has a center seam across the bottom. Tubs have a center dimple or indentation on the bottom. Keep these presorted and in separate bags by their number for the col- lection. Remember, No. 1 plastic is not being collected. Always check the number. There are several types of labels that will need to be removed. Some paper or plastic labels will require soaking or applying some cooking oil and letting it sit overnight. There are shrink wrapped labels (Chobani yogurt for example) that need to be removed, as well as plastic adhesive labels that peel off. If the container has a “heat stamped” label, those do not need to be removed. Remove any plastic or foil film on the top of tubs and jugs. Remember, if any label is too difficult to remove or cannot be removed, please throw the container in the garbage. When in doubt, just throw it out. Trays that are No. 1 and No. 6 are not accepted because they are not the correct plastic for this pro- gram. All other trays will be accepted. Sort them by the appropriate number. Lane County transfer stations and local garbage haulers collect No. 2 opaque (no color, not white) plastic jugs (milk, water, vinegar, etc.), so people can still put them in their co-mingle bin or take them to the transfer sta- tion. These plastics are not part of the collection and the labels do not need to be removed. Finally, if the communi- ty has any questions or needs any other informa- tion, people should contact the Lane County Waste Management department at plasticscollection@co. lane.or.us or visit www. lanecounty.org/plasticscol- lection. Do you want to be a Florence Community Collector? Go to www.lan- ecounty.org/plasticscollec- tion and click on the Community Collector Registration button before Oct. 31.
