Demand for
climate action
F
lorence residents took
part in multiple demon-
strations for climate aware-
ness in September, with
the final event occurring
on Saturday. More than a
dozen people rallied at the
junction of Highways 101
and 126 before marching to
Siuslaw Public Library for a
presentation by Florence
ORganizes Environmen-
tal Group, the Climate Alliance and
350 Eugene. In a talk called “Climate
Emergency,” 350 Eugene represen-
tatives Tom Peck and Karen Austin
addressed the rising levels of carbon
dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere
and answered questions from the
audience, made up of local students
and community members. In addi-
tion, some residents seek to bring more attention to climate change with a pe-
tition for Florence Mayor Joe Henry and City Manager Erin Reynolds to address
concerns brought before the Florence City Council in July.
Florence Garden Club presents on Cobra Lily Oct. 9
At the Florence Garden
Club meeting on Wednes-
day, Oct. 9, Honeyman
Park Ranger Katie Pollut
will speak about the Dar-
lingtonia State Natural Site,
the only Oregon state park
property dedicated to the
protection of a single plant
species — the carnivorous
“Darlingtonia Californica,”
also known as a Cobra Lily.
She will describe the plant
and its unique adaptations
that allow it to consume in-
sects.
Pollut, earned a Bachelor
of Science degree from Port-
land State University, and is
currently responsible for the
Interpretive Programming
at Honeyman State Park
south of Florence.
This program is free and
open to the public. It will be
presented at 1 p.m. on Oct.
9 at the Presbyterian Church
of the Siuslaw, 3996 High-
way 101 in Florence.
