SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 2019 | 5A Watershed presents on salmon Join the Siuslaw Water- shed Council on Wednes- day, Aug. 28, at the Siuslaw Public Library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., for a presentation about ocean and river eco- system indicators of salmon returns, and how folks use those indicators to deter- mine salmon fishing limits on the coast, which are set by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. John Spangler, District Fish Biologist with the Or- egon Department of Fish and Wildlife, will bring his 26 years of experience in the Northwest Oregon District to inform attendees about salmon spawning survey data collection, population estimates, forecasts and regulation development for Coho and Chinook salmon on the coast. Laurie Weitkamp, Re- search Fisheries Biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin- istration, will talk about ocean conditions and sur- vival of salmon while they’re in the ocean. Since 2014, ocean tem- peratures across the much of Northeast Pacific have been above average. Warm temperatures that start- ed with the “Blob” and the strong 2015-16 El Niño have persisted across much of the region despite two weak La Niñas. While the distributions and abundances of many species have returned to normal, other changes con- tinue due to biological lags and the persistence of warm water species in our area. This talk provides an up- date on how the “Blob,” El Niño, and La Niñas changed the ocean and the biological response to those changes, including many observa- tions from our local area. Weitkamp’s research fo- cuses on the ecology of salmon in estuarine and marine environments, in- cluding how physical con- ditions influence biological processes that are import- ant for survival. This topic includes documenting the impacts of recent anoma- lous conditions on marine ecosystems across the North Pacific Ocean. StoryTime at museum to feature Jesse Beers Jesse Beers, Cultural Stewardship Manager for the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, will begin the fall season of StoryTime on Friday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Siuslaw Pioneer Mu- seum, 278 Maple St. in Old Town Florence. Beers plans to give a little history of the Native peo- ple of this area, as well as a short introduction to their oral traditions and then tell a few of their traditional stories. Siuslaw News + Unitarians to hear about early Christian beliefs On Sunday, Aug. 25, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Florence Unitarian Univer- salist Fellowship, the Rev. Sarah Skochko will share a message titled, “A Radical Jesus.” According to Skochko, many Unitarian Universal- ists shy away from studying or discussing Christianity, as it is so often associated with oppressive right-wing fundamentalism in this country. But early Chris- tians had much more in common with Unitarian Universalists — including a desire for justice, an em- phasis on working togeth- er for a better world and a distinctly left-wing politics perspective. Skochko will consider how Jesus’ teachings can in- spire and guide non-Chris- tians today. The fellowship is at 87738 Highway 101 at Heceta Beach Road and is wheelchair accessible.
