The Florence Events Center (FEC) Gallery Committee invites artists to submit artwork, includ- ing 3-D and photography, for an October “Odd- Umm” exhibit that is both seasonal and unusual. Fall lends itself to great artistic opportunities, in- cluding beautiful autumn colors, the fall harvest, and wildlife preparing for win- ter as well as scarecrows, ghosts in anticipation of Halloween. Applications are avail- able by visiting the FEC website at EventCenter.org or pick one up at the FEC office during regular busi- ness hours. Cost is $20 per rod for up to three pieces (de- pending on size of art piec- es), or up to three pieces of 3-D art for display in the glass case. Application deadline for submissions is August 20. The community is invit- ed to attend the Artist Re- ception on Friday, Sept. 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. Winter Music Fest tickets on sale now Nine high-caliber groups will heat up the Florence Events Center on Jan. 24, 25 and 26, 2020, with blue- grass, new and traditional folk, and Americana during the 18th annual Florence Winter Music Festival. Those who plan ahead can save $10 on two- and three-day passes through today, Aug. 14. Discount- ed tickets are on sale in two waves, with the biggest discount available through today. Prices increase slightly until Sept. 20, then increase to full price on Sept. 21. A complete festival over- view, with artist profiles and early ticket discounts, is available at Winter-Mu- sicFestival.org. The weekend also offers the free Florence Regional Arts Alliance Winter Arts Festival — a show and sale with demonstrations by more than 20 renowned lo- cal and regional artists and craftspeople with two- and three-dimensional art, per- sonal care items, edibles, and adult potables. New this year will be workshops by the per- formers on songwriting, guitar skills, and jamming (separate admission for non-concertgoers). Free, dedicated onsite jamming space is available beginning at noon on Fri- day and 1 p.m. on both Sat- urday and Sunday. The musical lineup in- cludes festival headliner Livingston Taylor, who blends a range of musical genres — folk, pop, gos- pel, jazz — fusing it with upbeat storytelling and hit songs he’s written for his brother James. Bluegrass Friday features Canadian mandolin master John Reischman and the Jaybirds, and Grammy and IBMA award-winner Kathy Kallick with her band. Americana Saturday fea- tures the blues/rock/folk blend of Mr. & Mrs. Some- thing, Nashville’s sought-after guitarist Jim Hurst, and the multi-award-winning countr y/folk/bluegrass music of the Greg Blake Band. Saturday evening’s open- ing act (7 p.m.) is Circus No. 9, a hot new band that represents everything that’s good about the new gen- eration of acoustic music, blurring the lines between bluegrass, jazz, and rock — followed by headliner Liv- ingston Taylor at 8:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon brings the wildly creative Ty- ler Stenson, twice-named Portland’s performer-song- writer of the year, with his “elegant folk” as heard on SiriusXM’s Coffee House, followed by festival favor- ite True North’s Kristen Grainger and Dan Wetzel. The Florence Winter Music Festival is produced by the nonprofit Friends of the Florence Events Center, a volunteer organization that helps fund capital im- provements and perfor- mance grants at the venue. Heritage Players to attend next Genealogy Society meeting Members of the vol- unteer staff and the John Quay Heritage Players will inform and delight mem- bers of the Siuslaw Gene- alogy Society on Wednes- day, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Siuslaw Pioneer Muse- um. Museum Curator Pete Shoys, Sandy Zinn and other library volunteers will speak about the Kyle Research Library division of the museum. The library houses more than 1200 books and re- search files on every sub- ject of concern to Florence researchers and pioneer descendants. The volunteers have also produced several booklets relating to area history and the early settlers which are available at the museum. The artifact inventorying program “Past Perfect” is used by the curator and volunteers in cataloging and photographing arti- facts. They will explain the advantages and usefulness of this program in their work. The meeting will be- gin with re-enactments of l a u n n A 22nd scenes from the life of se- lected early settlers by sev- eral members of the John Quay Heritage Players. The Players research their characters and reveal realistic incidents from the history of their chosen counterpart. Individuals do not need to be a member to attend.
