The event will take place at Siuslaw High School, 2975 Oak St., from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second day of high school student registration. All blood donated stays in Lane County. There is no need for scheduling, so people will be able to come in for walk in appointments. Lane Blood Bank will give the Siuslaw HOSA chapter $500 for every 25 people who donate. Hannah Waller, treasur- er for Siuslaw HOSA, said the money from the event goes to registration for competitions, equipment needed by the chapter and travel fare for the students. HOSA Future Health Professionals is a student organization that seeks to empower students to be- come leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration and experience. The Siuslaw Pioneer Mu- seum is located at 278 Ma- ple St. in Historic Old Town Florence in an old school building from 1905. It is the home of historic displays, pictures and other informa- tion about the Siuslaw River area, including The Pioneers and the City of Florence. Visitors can spend just an hour or two at the museum or perhaps make a day of it and include a self-guid- ed Historic Walking Tour, which begins at the muse- um and stops by 21 differ- ent buildings and locations in the Old Town Florence area. City, county to stripe Florence streets this week Florence Public Works announced that striping of city streets will begin Thursday, Aug. 15, and conclude on Friday, Aug. 16, weather permitting. The City of Florence maintains 79.2 lane miles of roadway with approxi- mately 39.5 of those cen- ter lane miles. Under a co-operative contract with the City of Florence, Lane County crews will begin striping city streets on Thursday, weather permit- ting. Crews can only stripe when the road is dry and the temperature is above 50 degrees. Next to traffic control device maintenance, strip- ing is a top safety priority. Drivers, cyclists and pe- destrians are asked to re- member to give striping crews plenty of room and watch for the orange traffic cones on Florence streets, as well as “wet paint” signs on the vehicles in front or behind the striper. Although crews will use fast-drying, water-based paint, driving over fresh stripes or changing lanes when following a striping crew can remove the re- flectivity of the stripe, re- duce safety, increase main- tenance costs and spray paint onto your vehicle. The City of Florence does not assume responsi- bility for paint on vehicles. The paint used in the striping process is engi- neered to last, so it may be very difficult to remove from your vehicle if you drive on it while it’s wet. Once crews spray the paint on the roadway, it can take as little as 30 seconds or as long as five minutes to dry. If a driver does happen to drive over wet paint, it should be removed within the hour by a high-pres- sure hose and using warm soapy water. The city and county will deny all reimbursement claims if a driver crosses over wet paint. In order to be prepared for the striping, watch for orange traffic cones, warn- ing signs and warning trucks. Don’t change lanes behind a striping truck and do not drive on the yellow or white lines. The paint is water based, which is better for the en- vironment, and as the paint is applied thousands of lit- tle glass beads are deposit- ed upon the wet paint. The glass beads reflect lots of light even at night. When vehicle headlights hit the paint, tiny spheres in the glass beads reflect the light, making the stripes brighter for drivers in dark or rainy conditions. Coming up on Thurs- day, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m., the Siuslaw Public Library District will be hosting a 90-minute workshop for anyone interested in writ- ing a grant for the Lane County Cultural Coalition’s (LCCC) current round of Cultural Opportuni- ty Grants. The workshop will be held in the Bromley Room at the main branch of the Siuslaw Public library, 1460 Ninth St. in Florence. This free grant writing session will be led by Meg Spencer, Siuslaw Public Li- brary Director and LCCC board member, and is perfect for both first-time grant writers and anyone interested in learning more about LCCC and their granting process. The LCCC offers Cul- tural Opportunity Grants to provide county recogni- tion and support to signifi- cant cultural programs and projects, preserving and enhancing Lane County’s diverse arts, heritage, and WEDNESDAY THURSDAY AUGUST 14 Sunny 75°F 56°F AUGUST 15 humanities efforts. Cultural Opportuni- ty Grants are available to for-profit and nonprofit or- ganizations, as well as indi- viduals, to support access, awareness, and education for programs and projects related to arts, heritage and humanities. Spencer has served on the LCCC board for a number of years and is enthusiastic about the op- portunities afforded by the group to improve cultur- al access, education, and awareness to Lane County residents and, in particu- lar, Western Lane County residents. In last year’s funding cycle, more than $45,000 in grants was awarded by LCCC to support 21 cul- tural programs or projects across Lane County. If unable to attend the workshop, the public is still welcome to complete an ap- plication for an LCCC Cul- tural Opportunity Grant.
