We anchored near Oswald West State Park — close enough to see bonfi res on the beach and hear people hav-ing fun. Each day, we pulled anchor around 4 a.m. and fi shed until dark. By Th urs-day, the bins were getting full. When we pulled anchor on Friday morning, I was hopeful I would hear the words “put the gear in the boat we’re heading home,” from my dad. I was clock watching and coast watching. It takes time to pull gear and head home. When I fi nal- ly heard the words I had anxiously been waiting for, I never put the gear in the boat faster than I did on that day. Fishing is our livelihood and leav- ing while the salmon were still biting had to be a dif- fi cult decision for my dad. Even running full speed, it was going to be touch and go as to making it to port on time for my game. When Dad called home on the ship-to-shore radio, I overheard him tell Mom to gather up my baseball gear and meet us at the dock. As we ap-proached the Columbia River, my dad steered the boat towards the ever-dangerous Clat- sop spit. He turned to me and told me to brace my- self. When we came out on the other side, I could see the relief on my dad’s face from successful-ly cutting across the spit. When I tied the boat to the cannery cleats, I started to run to the car. My mom was waiting for me and my dad growled, “Where are you going?” “To the game,” I yelled back. “Not so fast — we have a boat to unload.” Oh no, I thought. It was getting close to 5:30 p.m. I never threw fi sh from the hole faster than that day. When the last fi sh land- ed, my dad said I could go and that he would clean the boat. I sprinted to the car and slid my uniform on while my mom drove us to the game. She for- got my cleats but there was no time to head home for them. We pulled up to the fi eld at 5:55 and I ran for Let us Sell the dugout. Several team- mates saw me and told the coach I was there. He put me in the line-up and I pitched wearing my high top black Converse tennis shoes. My foot traction was limited but my fastball was on target — and my Dad showed up in the fi ft h in- ning. I realized he was torn between getting me home to play and making mon- ey need-ed for the family. It would be the last game I played that summer. When I got on the boat for our next trip, I took down the baseball schedule and I told my dad the season was over even though there were several games left . I did not want him to put our lives in danger just so I could play. Th e phrase “It’s only a game” took on a whole new meaning as I remembered being braced in the door of the Nelma, watching the sky and the ocean trade places, just so I could play.
