Routinely dismissed as dan- gerous and hysterical outli- ers, these figures arose from the radical fringe of nearly every major social reform movement and sought to ameliorate the deepest so- cial ills of their times. With “American Messiahs,” Adam Morris offers the first com- prehensive account of this lineage of largely forgotten, self-proclaimed prophets, each of whom tried to point the way to a more just re- alization of the American dream. Morris begins this provoc- ative and exhaustively re- searched history by recount- ing the lives of two messiahs, each intent on shattering the patriarchal hierarchies of the Christian churches. In 1776, a young wom- an called Jemima Wilkin- son woke from a fever and announced her body now belonged to a spirit sent by God to complete a special mission of salvation. Casting off her name and sex to be known instead as the Uni- versal Friend, the person for- merly called Jemima went on to establish the communal- ist town of Jerusalem, New York. Around the same time, a resolutely pious woman named Ann Lee arrived in New York, where she gath- ered a religious following known as the Shakers. Be- lieving Mother Ann to be a female vessel of the Christ spirit, the Shakers lived in celibate communities that enshrined the equality of the sexes. Shifting into the 19th cen- tury, “American Messiahs” profiles two men inspired by the Shakers: the socialist California vintner and celeb- rity spirit medium Thomas Lake Harris, who led his dis- ciples in soul-saving breath- ing techniques, and the Civil War veteran and virulent an- ti-capitalist Dr. Cyrus Teed, who blended his sermons with lectures on brain sci- ence before attaining noto- riety as the messiah Koresh. Not long after the deaths of these two prophets, the dap- per and overlooked Father Divine traversed the streets of 20th-century Harlem in a chauffeured Rolls-Royce, investing in properties and winning recruits to his ur- ban communes. In many cities, Divine’s businesses were effectively some of the first hotels and restaurants to accommodate both blacks and whites, precisely because they would not acknowledge racial categories at all. Culminating in 1978 with Jim Jones and the tragic de- mise of his Peoples Temple, “American Messiahs” force- fully demonstrates why these charismatic figures and the social reform movement they led are crucial for un- derstanding American reli- gious and political history. A long-overdue history with continuing implications, this is a timely account of men and women who captured the imagination of a country in search of salvation. Lane County Cultural Coalition Grant Workshop The Lane County Cultural Coalition (LCCC) will be of- fering a free grant workshop on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the li- brary’s Bromley Room. LCCC awards grants in four categories and are in- tended to fund arts, heritage, history, preservation and hu- manities programs. Unlike many grant programs, ap- plicants to a LCCC grant are not required to be a 501(c) (3) organization but can also be an individual. The grants are for project activities that protect and stabilize Oregon’s cultur- al resources; expand public awareness of, access to and participation in quality cul- tural experiences in Oregon; ensure that Oregon cultur- al resources are strong and dynamic contributors to Oregon’s communities and quality of life; and build an understanding of the value and impact of culture to Or- egonians. Attorney addresses PFLAG meeting Aug. 13 Florence attorney Jane Hanawalt will address the regular PFLAG meeting Tuesday, Aug. 13, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Siuslaw Public Library’s Bromley Room. Hanawalt’s presentation about property transfer is- sues has relevance for the general public, although in some cases, Oregon and Federal law may have dispa- rate impact on the LGBTQ community. PFLAG en- courages as wide an audi- ence as possible. The meeting is free and open to the public. Refresh- ments will be served. There will be a special prize for the person who brings the greatest number of guests.
