2A | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2019 | SIUSLAW NEWS The first step to better hearing? On The Record I WILL HEAR OBITUARY AU S T I N — Wi l m a Louise (Seits) Austin was called by the angels while she slept on July 26, 2019. She was born to Victor Seits and Alta Nora (Prin- del) Seits, on April 16, 1928, the mid- dle child of five. S h e lived with her moth- Wilma Austin er and siblings in various locations in Oregon, spending sever- al years in Alsea before moving to Deadwood, and finally settling in Ca- nary, Ore. Wilma was a 1946 graduate of Siuslaw High School in Florence. On June 8, 1946 she married Virgil (Jim) Aus- tin and lived and worked on the Austin ranch at Canary until 1985. They then moved to Elmira, Ore., where she lived un- til 2014 when she moved to Springfield. Wilma will be remem- bered for many things including hard work, sewing skills, a big heart, amazing strength and hu- mor, plus pinochle and cribbage trainings that she shared with her chil- dren and grandchildren — even though she won most of the time. ODOT says expect network delays Ongoing computer and phone network issues that began late last week are continuing to cause delays at state offices, phone centers and online services. This includes high-vol- ume services such as DMV. Email and web pages may also experience de- lays in downloading. Expect delays when making calls or visiting state offices in person or online. Resolving this issue is the top priority for state information systems of- ficials. There is no estimate on when the problems will be fixed. Wilma was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Anderson, in 1985; her husband Virgil (Jim) Austin in 2011; and her siblings: Helen Hockema, Mabel (Bedell) Dodge, Gale Seits and Joan Beers. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Karla and Ron Miller; son and daughter-in- law Ray and Rochelle Austin; grandchildren Teresa (Anderson) and Chris Page, Kendra Aus- tin, Dylan and Kaylie Austin, and James Pike; g re at - g r an d ch i l d re n : MacKenzie Page, Cobie Page and Bailey Page; and great-great-grandchild Henley Harvey. The cal- endar is flipping to Au- gust and wildfires are already burning along I-5 in southern Oregon and along other roads in central, eastern and western Oregon. “You may find re- duced visibility due to smoke and active fires near the highway, and experi-ence delays,” said Darrin Neavoll, ODOT District 7 maintenance manager in Southwest Oregon. “When driv- ing through smoky fire zones, make sure your headlights are on and you’re watching for fire- fighters and equipment, not taking pictures.” Neavoll said one of the best tools is to be in the know by checking Tripcheck.com for any road restrictions or clo- sures. Some safe driving ad- vice for this summer: • If there’s smoke, turn on headlights and slow down • If you can’t see, care- fully pull to the side of the road • If pulling a trailer, make sure nothing is dragging that can spark or overheat • Keep vehicles well-maintained so it doesn’t overheat or get a flat tire • Don’t throw things out of vehicles — like a lit cigarette • Carry an emergen- cy kit with extra water, food and medications • Know your route and possible detours • Pay attention — you need to drive, not take pictures. Especially when there’s a fire. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Pres- byterian Church of the Siuslaw, 3996 Highway 101 in Florence. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in memory of Wilma L. Austin to the Demen- tia Society of America by mail to P.O. Box 600, Doylestown, Pa., 18901, or online at www.Demen- tiaSociety.org/donate. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
