8A | SATURDAY, JULY 27, 2019 | SIUSLAW NEWS Northwest Memory Care to host open house Northwest Memory Care is opening in August and is inviting the public for some adult beverages, hors d’oeu- vres, a raffle and informa- tion about foods that sup- port brain health during an open house on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The center is located at 5292 Harvard (across the bridge, turn by Best West- ern Pier Point Inn). Ronda and Troy, the new owners, said they are excit- ed to become members of the Florence community. Ronda brings over 25 years of experience work- ing with people with mem- ory loss; Troy is a plumbing contractor. Together, they hope to bring a balance to serving the community and its loved ones. Entertainment during the open house will be provided by Uncommon Bond, a Lane County group of musicians that specialize in therapeutic music for people with memory loss. There will also be ac- tivities such as corn-hole, horse shoes, a giant Jenga and more. Concert to benefit Pat Knipe Art Scholarship The Siuslaw Middle School will hold a benefit concert Saturday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. featuring sing- er-song writer Megan Slan- kard. All proceeds will go to- wards the Pat Knipe Art scholarship fund. Donations of a mini- mum of $20 are requested at the door. Chip seal operations to begin Monday Beginning Monday, July 29 (weather permitting), chip sealing operations will begin along Rhodo- dendron Drive between Fawn View Lane and Se- bastian Street. Chip sealing will also take place on Spruce Street from 25th to 32nd streets; 32nd Street be- tween Spruce and Red- wood streets; Redwood Street between 32nd and 35th Street and 42nd Street from Highway 101 to Spruce Street. Chip Sealing is a com- mon pavement mainte- nance practice that ex- tends pavement life and provides a good driving surface. With chip seals, a thin film of heated asphalt liq- uid is sprayed on the road surface, followed by the placement of small aggre- gates (“chips”). The chips are compact- ed to orient them for max- imum adherence to the asphalt, and excess stone is swept from the surface. A fog seal is then applied to further bind the chips to the asphalt liquid, protect the chip seal from UV rays and finish the road preser- vation. The City has completed five other chip seal proj- ects in recent years. The first project was on Oak street between 20th and 35th streets. The second project was completed on Rhododendron Drive between 35th and Light- house Way; the third proj- ect was completed on 35th street between Pine and Siano Loop; the fourth project was completed on Oak street between 35th and 46th streets; and last year our project was lo- cated on Rhododendron Drive from Lighthouse Way to Fawn View Lane. The City will be ap- plying MicroCoat to the bike lanes along the chip seal sections of Spruce, 32nd, Redwood and 42nd streets. MicroCoat is a micro seal coating system that will protect the bike lanes from degradation. MicroCoat was custom designed at a state-of-the- art laboratory in Portland Oregon, specifically for the Pacific Northwest. It will provide a smoother surface for the bicyclists and pedestrians. MicroCoat is a specialty coating designed for road surfaces that have signs of deterioration from years of service, as well as beautify- ing and preserving the ex- isting asphalt. MicroCoat is a Polymer Modified Emulsion, specially for- mulated with the weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest in mind. As with any street con- struction project there will be slight delays during the chip and fog seal applica- tion along with the Micro- Coat application. Residents are advised to use alternative routes to avoid the work area from July 29 to Aug. 1. If you do need to travel in these corridors, please slow down; be patient and attentive to the traffic con- trol flaggers.
